Chuck Cooper and I were classmates at Austin Elementary School in Harlingen, Texas. He was the tallest boy in my class. His height may have created a certain awkwardness for Chuck but he was a good sport and always kind to other students. Fortunately, other boys and girls grew taller too so by the time all of us graduated from high school Chuck Cooper no longer towered above everyone.
After graduation, I loss track of Chuck. It has been over 50 years since we last spoke. His obituary suggests he was creative, cultured, successful and well traveled. I hope he was happy too.
Rest in peace Charles E. Cooper.
