Dorothy DeLONG Obituary

DeLONG,

Dorothy Weygint

Dorothy Weygint DeLong was born December 19, 1921 in Howard, South Dakota and died on December 17, 2014, 2 days short of her 93rd birthday. She was the light of our lives. The youngest of 4 sisters, she lost her mother at age 11 and was raised by her father, Walter Weygint, an attorney, during the depression years. Her childhood nickname was "Marbletop". In 1945, she married her husband, Clive DeLong, a Texan stationed in Sioux Falls, South Dakota during WWII. After the war, they moved to Austin and Dorothy worked at UT while Clive attended college. His work as an engineer and physicist took them to Minnesota, Florida, Maryland, Alabama and Tennessee, and everywhere they lived she made lifelong friends. In 1971 they returned to Austin and Dorothy again began working at UT, ultimately retiring from the Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures after 20 years. She immediately began working with her daughter, Lisa, as a paralegal and continued to draft the majority of her legal documents until her final retirement in 2012. She was a Democrat. She read the newspaper every day and remained interested in current affairs until her death. Kind, loving, compassionate, open-minded and always non-judgmental, she was the best mother, the best grandmother, the best aunt and the best friend anyone could have. Dorothy drank black coffee and ate chocolate everyday, both of which she credited for her longevity. She was a strong woman and she will be greatly missed.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Weygint and Ruth Londahl Weygint, her 3 sisters, Phyllis Bergen, Peggy Bang and Patricia Minor, her husband, Clive Oliver DeLong, Jr., and her son, Mark Oliver DeLong. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa DeLong and husband Walter, by her grandchildren, Mardi Delong and husband Daniel Robnett, Mark Delong and wife, Ashlyn, Michael DeLong and Ruth DeLong Pyron and husband Justin McDaniels, by her great-grandchildren, David L. Brown, IV, Sara Robnett, River McDaniels and Mason DeLong, and by numerous nieces and nephews.
