I am saddened to learn of the passing of Rex Peebles. We worked together at Austin Community College and kept in touch by seeing each other at professional conferences over the years. Rex was a friend, a fine educator ,a believer in opportunity and inclusion and most importantly a good person. I am happy that I got to know him and he will be missed.

Sincere condolences to all of Rex's family and friends. I was very saddened to hear of his passing.
Rex was a great colleague at Austin Community College, and he was fun to work with. My favorite memory of him is from big meetings, where all kinds of issues were debated and discussed. Sometimes, Rex would cock his head, get a smile on his face, and say, "Yes, but have your considered. . . . .?" That always brought a new, and much needed, perspective to the discussion. Thank you, Rex, for that, and for your great sense of humor.

My interactions with Rex were always inspiring. Rex was very willing to help me think through policy issues as I adjusted to my new responsibilities and struggled with approving new doctoral programs. His generosity and willingness to do some hand holding really made an impression on me. I can only hope that his family knows that many of us who crossed paths with him over the years and across many states know him to be a good and generous man.

Rex Peebles was a friend and colleague that I came to know the past several years through professional associations in higher education. I saw Rex just last month at a conference and we had such a wonderful conversation about his early career, his start in higher education, and his work with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. We were scheduled to meet earlier today.
To his family, friends, and colleagues, I share in your love of Rex and offer my deepest condolences. The world is a bit smaller today without Rex.

Dr. Pebbles was a passionate advocate and firm supporter of the contribution of community colleges for student success and community enrichment. His diverse educational experience coupled with the broad understanding of the challenges faced by higher education institutions aided in the development and implementation of many programs across the state.
Dr. Peebles was a devoted, educational leader, whom will be deeply missed by many.

I got to know Rex through the various THECB committees on which I served. He was intelligent, very knowledgeable about higher education and quite witty. He always knew how to put things into perspective. Rex will be greatly missed by many, especially by those of us in higher education. He was a true advocate for higher education students and for community colleges. My condolences go out to Rexs family. May God bless you all in this time of sorrow. Rex will be missed by all of us who worked with him. We worked together for over 20 years, and during that time he never lost his sense of humor, was consistent, dependable, and could always be counted on to succeed at whatever challenge or assignment he accepted. He was true to the principles he believed in, focused on bringing out the best in his students and made sure they were exposed to a quality education. He knew how to approach, and work with people in a way that brought out the best in them. He held high expectations of himself and others , was always willing to assist and left a positive impression with all who met him. His contributions to higher education are many and his leadership was unmatched. Rex was a scholar - a good and honorable person whose impact on students and those with whom he worked will live on. My sympathy goes out to his family.

Rex was a colleague and co-author. I admired his ability to collaborate with colleagues, whether it concerned the art of teaching or making significant contributions to political science and the understanding of political behavior. For example, Rexs chapter on civil rights and civil liberties was a first for a Texas government textbook. I am deeply saddened by his passing and wish to convey my sincerest sympathies to his family on their loss.

On Thursday September 19th, 2019 I met Mr. Rex Peebles for the first time at a Perkins presentation at Tarrant County College south campus. It is very sad and shocking to learn that five days after he has passed on ... while I found his presentation very critical to colleges that are recipient of Perkins grants, I must add that the state of TX especially the Higher Education Coordinating Board and colleges/universities around the state have a lost a valuable advocate for education funding... may he RIP...

I always got a kick out of how he would infuse one of his funny stories into what some thought would be serious response to some troubling issue in higher ed. I highly admired Rex with his tremendous knowledge and ability to quickly think through a problem, ask a few questions, and then determine the best solution, while maintaining a down-to-Earth disposition. A line in the well-written obituary describes him perfectly, " a traditional Texan who loved his cowboy boots and a good beer, but he was also a learned man who enjoyed philosophical and political debates". That was Rex. I would want to add, "and a wonderful boss who knew how to connect with everyone at the workplace, yet still maintain an authoritative presence". I will miss Rex coming into my office talking some work and telling a personal story that usually connected directly with the work topic we had just discussed. My deepest sorrow and most compassionate thoughts go out to Sandra, Natalie and Nicole. Rex made the world, especially Texas, a better place.

My memories go much further back than his professional career - to our childhood in Oak Cliff. We went to school and church together for many years. I talked to him several years ago about getting together for a Beckley Hills reunion and he was happy to know many of the old gang were still around. I am sorry we never organized the actual reunion. Rex was one of kindest and most respected people working in higher education. There wasn't one elected official that didn't value his policy advise and opinions. We recently had the pleasure of hosting Rex as part of our Enlighten Talks at the Texas Council of Academic Libraries annual conference. I got to enjoy time with him at the evening reception. He has always been an approachable and engaging person. He was fantastic in his role at THECB and in higher education across the state. Rex chaired the hiring committee that hired me at ACC 20 years ago and was the Dean for our division of the college. He was always friendly and approachable and knew the answer to any and all questions and issues at ACC. I many times heard people say that Rex's "super power" in ACC committee meetings was his knowledge of the college programs and processes, and the people. To his wife and daughters, I'm so sorry for your loss.

My heart goes out to his wonderful wife and daughters. Rex was our dads first cousin but there was 23 years difference between them. I always loved seeing the two of them standing around talking, always full of stories. My dad always had a story to tell about his relatives or the good old days growing up. Rex would be right there listening and adding to it. As cousins, we were closer in age, so we had always gathered in a group and just enjoyed the fellowship of each other.
Rex was so friendly, witty and a great listener and conversationalist. Growing up I really dont remember him, were only two years apart, but we didnt attend very many reunions. But in the last 25 years, we got to know each other better. When our dad was dying in the hospital in December of 2017, we greatly appreciated that Rex made such an effort to bring his dad to see him. Dad and Uncle Charles were only 6 years apart and spent a lot of time together growing up in Uvalde. Rex will be greatly missed by all of us. Im sure he and our dad are already sharing stories.
