Sally Miller Obituary

Sally Crowe Miller Sally Crowe Miller died peacefully on December 18th, at her home in Austin, sitting in her favorite chair. Sally was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, where her father was a civil engineer and an importer of Franklin automobiles. The Crowe family returned to Texas and Sally graduated from high school in San Benito. She attended Baylor University before graduating Magma Cum Laude from the University of Texas at Austin in 1944. While at UT she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Delta Pi and several English and Spanish honorary societies. She was a Blue Bonnet Belle nominee. Sally married V. L. Keith Miller in 1945 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Besides Corpus Christi, they lived in the New York City area, Denver and Akron. After Keith's death in 1972, Sally moved to Austin where she worked 17 years at the University of Texas. She retired as an Executive Assistant in the Dean's office of the College of Liberal Arts. While in Corpus Christi Sally was a charter member of the "21 Study Club" and two Presbyterian churches. She was also a member of Magna Charta Dames, the University Ladies Club and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. During her Austin years Sally was a docent at both the Governor's Mansion and the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, co-founded Austin's first Antique Club, volunteered at the Next-to-New Thrift Shop and as an usher at U.T.'s Performing Arts Center. She was a passionate bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs in Austin. Sally is survived by her three children, Lynn Bennett of Houston, Trent H. Miller of Austin and Charlotte Smith of Winston-Salem, NC; five grandsons, Marshall Bennett, Tyler Bennett, Andrew Miller, Charles Miller, Travis Smith; one great-granddaughter, Lanta Smith; and three sisters, Florence Rautenberg of Leavenworth, WA, Marion Hansen of Corpus Christi and Lucille Box of Midland. She was predeceased by her brother John Crowe of Boca Raton, FL. Through Trent's wife, Meta Butler Hunt, she had an extended Austin family of nineteen ranging from age 2 to 93. Sally was a storehouse of knowledge which she gleaned from her extensive travels abroad, extended educational opportunities presented through UT, her docent work and a wonderful curiosity about life. She led a very active life, maintaining her cheerful disposition until the end. Sally's friends and family bid her adieu. A celebration of Sally's life will be held Tuesday. Please contact Trent Miller at 512-923-3947 for more information. Please, no flowers or gifts.
