Andrew DuPont Obituary

Andrew Joseph "Drew" DuPont Jr. of St. Augustine passed away early New Year's Day 2008 at Flagler Hospital after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was 66 years old.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1941, Drew moved to St. Augustine when he was a young boy. He attended Cathedral Parish School and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy. From there he graduated from the University of Florida and later received his MBA from the University of North Florida.

After graduating from Florida, he attended Officer Candidate School for the U.S. Air Force and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War as a B-52 aircraft commander. After completing his active duty service, he returned home and continued to serve in the Air Force Reserves and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Once back in St. Augustine, he and his brothers took over the family construction business, W.D. DuPont and Sons, where Drew served as president. He finished his career as a certified safety professional for Cedar Hill Insurance.

Drew was a very active member of the local community in the following organizations: Kiwanis, Elks Lodge, Boy Scouts, Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus and Parish Council of San Sebastian Catholic Church.

Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Lynne DuPont of St. Augustine; his four loving children, Nicole Torres of St. Augustine, Andrew Joseph "Trey" DuPont III of Solana Beach, Calif., James Powell and Bryan Powell, both of St. Augustine; one sister, Sue Ann Nanney of St. Augustine; three brothers, Ed DuPont and John DuPont, both of Ponte Vedra, and Frank DuPont of St. Augustine; and seven beautiful grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Joseph DuPont Sr. and Sue Robbins DuPont.

Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, from 7-9 p.m. at San Sebastian Catholic Church with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at 11 a.m. followed by graveside services with full military honors at San Lorenzo Cemetery. A reception will follow at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

We ask that you join us in the celebration of the life of a truly wonderful father, husband, brother, son, friend and outstanding member of the local community who will be terribly missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the San Sebastian Catholic Church Building Fund.
