Born July 30, 1982, in Milford, Del., Coty grew up to be a well-rounded young woman with a passion for life. While in high school in Jacksonville, Fla., she swam on the Bolles National Championship team for four years. Upon graduating, she spent eight weeks exploring the Colorado Rockies with Outward Bound and her adventurous spirit then led her to Yosemite where she climbed El Capitan. A bright young woman, Coty scored 1470 on her SATs which placed her in the top 5 percent of college-bound students. She attended the University of South Carolina for two years before transferring to the School of Arts in Cortona, Italy. She finished her college education at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida in 2005. After college, Coty was employed by Morgan Stanley Financial Services in Columbia, S.C. In the summer of 2007, she was planning to marry the love of her life, Thomas Flitter of Columbia, S.C.
Coty's compassionate and tender heart was demonstrated while she was still in college when she encountered an abandoned dog after a hurricane. The pup would not allow anyone near, yet Coty patiently persisted for five days, successfully winning the dog's trust and succeeding in taking LuLu home to feed and care for her.
Although Coty's life was taken so quickly she was able to give life to three other people through the organ donation program.
Coty's family members include her parents, Ronald E. and Cynthia R. Hastings of Ponte Vedra Beach; three sisters, Chelsea Hastings of Ponte Vedra Beach, Paige Hastings and Whitney Hastings Pogwist, both of Seaford, Del.; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Doris Minton of Seaford and Lewes, Del. Coty was preceded in death by both her paternal grandparents Norman E. and Margaret Lane Hastings and maternal grandmother Marilyn Case.
A memorial service for Coty will be held on Sunday, April 2 at 3 p.m on the Beach Club Pavilion of the Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach. The Beach Club is located on Ponte Vedra Boulevard. To celebrate Coty's life, guests at the service are asked to wear elegant spring attire.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to the Coty Hastings Memorial Fund at Flagler College. Checks should be made out to Flagler College, (For the Coty Hastings Memorial Fund) and sent to the College at 74 King St., St. Augustine, FL, 32084.

To the Family of Coty Hastings,
My prayers and condolences are with you for the loss of your Beloved Coty.
"The worse loss in life is the loss of a child."
I share your pain and heartache as I lost my 21 year old son named Harley Walls due to a car accident.
The pain and emptiness is unbearable, we never, ever epect to have to bury our child before us.
May God Bless You and your Family.

Dear Ron, Chelsea, and Cynthia, I leap where I have no right, but could not stop myself from giving a hint of the grief I feel. If not for fortune or fate, I would be in your place and never forget. Graves like cradles rock in our hearts and make the better of us. the better or worst. Bad times have too often embittered me. Coty was good and I will never know anything less than the mixblood of humanity that ran in her veins. I do not mean to be obscure; I mean to say that as we age we seem to know less more than more of ourselves and our children. We try. We love the best we can. It is never enough too save them from themselves much less accidents. I’m sorry, Cindy. I tried to call. Ron is listed but your number is not. Love, kim nielsen

Coty was a wonderful friend in high school. This has come as such a shock, that such a wonderful person could be taken so quickly. My deepest sympathies to Mr. and Ms. Hastings, and to her sisters.

::Sigh:: What is there to say that could possible soothe anyone's heart? Coty was too big for this world, anyone that knew her knew that. I had the pleasure of having her as one of my great friends for a long time. We've shared in so many adventures, memories, and laughs. I'll miss not creating more with her. Our little world is just that, too little for that huge spirit of hers. I miss her deeply and will always love her dearly. It's hard to think positive at a time like this, but knowing Coty, she'd want us all to find some way to laugh and be uplifted by her soul. To the Hastings, all of you will forever be my extended family and I'm here for each of you in whatever way I can be.

Coty will forever be in my heart, and will always be missed. She was an incredible person who always had a way of making others feel welcome. She was funny, smart, hard working, easy going, outgoing, loving, caring, and so much more. My prayers go out to her family, friends, and Thomas. As I am deeply saddend, I do know that she has gone to a good place, and will cherish the memories I had with her.
