Dian Fedak Obituary

Dian Fedak, of West Palm Beach and more recently St. Augustine, died May 9, 2009, at Flagler Hospital after a valiant battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Newport, R.I., May 9, 1949, to Kathryn and Walter Fedak, Dian was an outstanding student and creative spirit. She graduated from Riviera Beach High School in 1967, received her Bachelor of Arts from Florida State University in 1971 and her Doctorate of Jurisprudence with honors from Florida State University in 1981. After receiving her law degree, Dian worked for the Florida State Attorney's Office until she began her private practice in family law. Her professional excellence and unquestionable ethics prompted members of the judiciary and the bar to award her an AV (Very High to Preeminent) rating, the highest rating presented to outstanding lawyers.

As a teenager, Dian showed an early talent for both clothing and interior design. Her flair remained apparent in her dramatic jewelry, love of textiles, and her artfully crafted home. Many of these items were brought back from trips with family and friends to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, New York City, San Francisco, Denver, Las Vegas and North Carolina. She was always planning the next adventure and inviting you along. Although it would be stretching the truth to characterize her as even somewhat athletic, she wholeheartedly embraced skiing, horseback riding, sailing, roller-blading and kayaking, and inevitably had an injury to mark the occasion.

An indomitable advocate for civil rights, Dian championed equality and actively supported candidates whose actions reflected her own. She proudly wore buttons, displayed yard signs and drove voters who were unable to drive themselves to their polling places. She also served as a voters' advocate.

The greatest joy in her life remained her daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Fedak, born in August 1992. She delighted in her first words and steps and watched her grow into a resilient and beautiful young woman of whom she was most proud. Dian attributed the ferocity and optimism with which she battled her cancer to her "heart," her daughter, Lauren.

Dian is survived by her mother, Kathryn Fedak; her daughter, Lauren; her sister, Karen Bunker (Bill); her brothers, Dennis (Linda), Rick (Kathy), Scott (Holly) and Bob (Cyndee); her nieces, Michelle Curtin, Amanda Fedak, Liza Bunker, Alison Bunker, Sarah Fedak and Katie Fedak; her nephew, Craig Fedak; and two grandnieces, Emma Curtin and Elizabeth Curtin. She was preceded in death by her father, Walter Fedak, in 2007.

Dian's life was characterized by incredible optimism, courage and strength of character. We loved her and will miss her.

We would like to thank all the doctors and nurses who lovingly cared for Dian during her illness.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2009, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Palm Beach Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dian's memory to the Ovarian Cancer Survivors Foundation through the Camp Mak-A-Dream Web site at www.campdream.org or the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, either online or by mail at 14 Pennsylvania Plaza, Suite 1400, New York, NY 10122.

I am sorry to hear of Dian's passing. We worked together as young cub lawyers at Ackerman Bakst in the mid 80's. Dian and I were lunch buddies and I enjoyed her company very much. I will miss her.

To Dian's Family, I knew Dian both during her time as an assistant state attorney and also when she was in private practice. She was a very dedicated attorney and always well prepared for court. I was so happy for her when Lauren came into her life; I attended the baby shower. I last saw her a couple years ago in Orlando at a family law section seminar which she attended to catch up with everyone. Despite the struggles with her illness, she maintained a positive demeanor and was interested in others and happy to see friends. My condolences on her loss.

To Dian's family: We were sorry to hear of Dian's passing. She was a really sweet friend - Tom met and worked with her at the State Attorneys Office "back in the day". She was one of the three ladies to attend our wedding and shared in our special day. She always had a smile no matter how bad things got. I remember her happiest when Lauren came into her life. She loved being a mom. Our thoughts and prayers go out to each of you at this sad time.

To Dian's Family:
My heartfelt sympathy to each of you.
I remember Dian with fond memories and respect for her excellent work in Palm Beach County as a dedicated attorney.
In 1984 after back surgery I was assigned to Gun Club Road First Appearances Court. I wore a back brace and looked like a train wreck.
Dian was also assigned to Gun Club having been injured and required to wear a neck brace.
We truly were the walking wounded. It was quite a sight. Nevertheless we both plodded on.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Lauren and Family of Dian,
I am so sorry that we all have lost Dian. But the loss of a mother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law and aunt is especially hard to bear. I have only really known Dian for the last 6-7 years. My fondest memories will be of those few summers we spent together doing sun and fun things. Lauren, Chris and I will have lots of photos and special memories to remind us of those good times spent with Dian. Even though her energy level was low, she enthusiastically enjoyed our time together, going out to lunch, enjoying beer and oysters on a deck overlooking boats and the water. She did love a good time and always had so much to talk about! She truly was a wonderful, giving person and I was privileged to know her and spend time with her.

To Dian's family, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Dian. I have not seen her since she moved away but she remained in my thoughts and prayers as I knew she was still facing the challenges of her illness. Lauren went to Lake Park with my daughter, Meghann Halker and Dian became a friend of mine through them. I know how much she loved Lauren and made her the center of her life! She was a very special person and I was fortunate to know her.
My sincere sympathy for the loss of Dian.
