John Fitzgerald Obituary

John William Fitzgerald, 88, St. Augustine, passed away peacefully at the Bailey Center of Community Hospice of Northeast Florida in St. Augustine on Jan. 30, 2011.

He was a good man, a good husband and father. He loved his family deeply. He met his bride Alice of 65 years while they where both serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. They where devoted to one another.

After the war, John returned to college where he earned his law degree and later passed the bar. He returned to government service and worked until his retirement with the Central Intelligence Agency. Never one to stand still, he later worked on several government task forces with several agencies in law enforcement and security matters. He was a devout man and was active for years with the church and the Knights of Columbus. His memory will live forever in the hearts of his family, friends, and of those who knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife, Alice; daughters, Jill (Jim) Hawley, and Colleen (Richard) Raniere; sons, John Michael Fitzgerald, James (Carol) Fitzgerald, William "Bill" Fitzgerald, Timothy Fitzgerald, Patrick (Kim) Fitzgerald; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Brian (Chris) Fitzgerald.

There will be a visitation with prayers at 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday at Craig Funeral Home with a funeral Mass at 2 p.m. at the Prince of Peace Votive Chapel on San Marco Avenue, Friday.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida would be appreciated.

Not sure what to say?

The only picture I have of him right now. On my graduation day, just under a year ago. He didn't realize I was taking a picture. :) I love you.

I miss Grandpa and think about him every day. As quiet as he was most of the time, he made such an impact in my life. He was the most amazing man I've known and I'll always miss him. I love him with all of my heart, and it's so nice to see the entries on here that show the other people that cared too.

We've been thinking of the Fitzgerald family particularly through these difficult few months and especially this week with Jack's death. What an amazing life of service he led and quite a family he fathered! We will keep you in prayer, particularly Alice who must feel lost without her lifelong partner. With sadness and much love, Michaelene and Candace

As we were growing up and were all part of the Petrie Family, our cousin Jack was always admired and loved. We will certainly miss him and wish his family well.

Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.
Hold tight to memories for comfort,
Lean on your family & friends for strength,
And always remember how much you are cared about.
Grandad(Dad) we love you, and may the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

Although I never did have the honor of meeting Jack, I have heard many wonderful things about him from my sister, your daughter in law, Kim.
I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you in my prayers. Loretta doesn't have a computer but she sends her condolances.
