He was born in Hartsville, S.C., and had been a resident of San Mateo for the past 23 years, coming from Elkton where he had lived for half of his life. He was a 1972 graduate of the St. Joseph's Academy in St. Augustine. He was a farmer and worked at the Povia Farm in Elkton. He was a member of First Baptist Church of San Mateo where he had served as a Sunday school teacher, discipleship teacher, prayer coordinator, yokeman and chairman of the brotherhood committee. He loved playing his guitar, fishing, shrimping and reading.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Cathy L. Howle of San Mateo; his father and stepmother, Thomas and Betty Howle of Elkton; his mother and stepfather, Marge and Joe Bridges of Lake City; three daughters and sons-in-law: Billie and Jason Theed of St. Augustine; Katie McQuaig of St. Augustine; Ciara Howle of San Mateo; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Diane Howle of Palatka; two sisters and brother-in-law: Fran and Tod Thomas of Tallahassee; Judy Wimberley of Palatka; two grandchildren: Trey Theed and Kira Theed, both of St. Augustine.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with Rev. Leroy Lewis and Rev. Harry Varnadoe officiating. In memory and celebration of John's life, a video tribute will be shown. Burial will follow in the Palatka Memorial Gardens.

Masters Funeral Home of Palatka is in charge of arrangements.

My condolences and prayers go out to Johnnie's family. I remember his easy-going spirit and his kind ways when we were in school in Hastings and at St. Joe. He was a true Southern Gentleman and the Lord is happy to have him.
