John Iwanicki Obituary

John J. Iwanicki, former Marine and electronics/aerospace engineer, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, in St. Augustine, Fla. of complications due to cancer. He was 83. Born in Meriden, Conn., Oct. 15, 1929, John attended the University of Connecticut, leaving in 1953 to join the Marine Corps. He was an expert marksman, awarded many metals and achieved rank of buck sargent at record pace.

John earned certification from the RCA Institute in Electronics Engineering. Always curious, he was well-versed in radio, radar and radiation technologies. His expertise and engineering prowess led to much advancement in modern combat and civilian aircraft. His career in avionics took him world-wide, finally settling in St Augustine in 1968 to raise a family. He retired from Grumman in 1996, infamous for his Tic-Tac box test kit.

John was very social. His communication skill transcended language, familiarity or background. He was a character. His playful demeanor was evident from the moment you met him.

John took up flying and fishing in his adult years and was always eager to spend days out in the air or on the water.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Judith; his children, Stasia, Richard and Debra; son-in-law, Jamie Bird; grandchildren Jack, Corbin and Griffin; and his sisters Eleanor and Dorothy. A celebration of life will be held in St Augustine, Sunday, Nov. 10; specific location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to the American Cancer Society.

My heart goes out to Judy,Richard and the rest of the Iwanicki family.Richard and my son grew up together so I had several times to have conversation with John. I did not know him personally but yes on first meeting John,you knew he was a character. Judy, God Bless you and your family and John Rest in Peace.

Very sorry to hear about John's passing. Our condolences go out to his family. My many years of working with him were not without a lot of humor. I rather suspect that the Tic-Tac industry will also morn his passing. John always seemed to have an ample supply of them available. Will miss you guy.

Sorry to hear of John's death, I recall the years we worked together at Grumman and what an interesting character John was.I specifically remember him talking about find a car while he was mowing hie grass. There will never be another John Iwanicki. My condolences to his family.

I send my deepest condolences to the Iwanicki Family in this time...Having known John my entire life, he was indeed quite the character and very colorful! He was unique in many ways and very talented in what he did throughout his careers in the Marine Corps and engineer at Grumman. RIP, John. You will be missed!
