Dale Huebner Obituary

Dale Walter Huebner

Dale Walter Huebner, 85, died peacefully on December 29, 2020 in Maple Grove, MN, after a long illness.

Dale was born on November 3, 1935, in Leopolis, Wisconsin to Hortense (born Finch) and Walter Huebner. He graduated from Clintonville High School in 1953 where he excelled in all sports, particularly football and baseball.

Dale entered the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country for two years during the Korean War. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he was a 4-year football letter winner, playing both sides of the line as center, linebacker, as well as kicking. He held the career PAT (Point After Touchdown) record for many years. The Whitewater team was the Wisconsin State College Football Champions in 1959. Dale also earned three letters in baseball and led the Warhawks to two conference baseball championships. Dale graduated from Whitewater in 1960 and earned a master's degree in Physical Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1964. In 1978, Dale was inducted into the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Athletic Hall of Fame.

Dale married Dianne Hanson, a business teacher, in 1959, welcoming daughter Linda in 1960 and son Phil in 1963.

Dale began his teaching career at Cambridge (WI) High School where he taught history and physical education. He was the head football, track, and assistant basketball coach. Dale moved his family to Stevens Point, WI, to teach at Stevens Point Area Senior High (SPASH) from 1967 until his retirement in 1993. He was chairman of the physical education department, taught drivers education and was the defensive coordinator of the football team. Dale was elected to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2009.

In 1996, Dale married Helen Erdman, who died in 2018. Dianne Huebner passed in 2007.

Dale was known for his big smile, kindness, generosity, and love of sports—always willing to offer a helping hand. His travelling companions through most of his life were Dianne and then Helen. In retirement, Dale wintered in Arizona while living in Clintonville, WI, where he was active in the community, particularly the VFW and golfing.

He is survived by daughter Linda (John) Sauer--grandchildren Kim (Jeff) Herzog, Ben, and Abby; son Phil (Deb) Huebner--grandchildren Rebecca and Bret; siblings Russ (Shirley), Doug (Donna), Jerry, and Eileen as well as many nieces and nephews. Dale will also be missed by all the lives he touched through his 30+ years of teaching, coaching, and mentoring.

Linda and Phil would like to thank all the awesome caregivers of Brighton Hospice and Arbor Lakes Senior Living in Maple Grove, Minnesota, who looked after their father with love, kindness, and professionalism.

The family plans to have a private burial service in the Spring of 2021.

Remembering the good times and some of the accomplishments while teaching with you. In the early seventies you had the 1st coed class in physical education; after that semester, coed classes were the norm. Our curriculum through your support was always focused on lifetime activities for the health and benefit of all students. Your badminton skills were one of the best; students would stand in line to challenge you between classes just to get a couple of points.
Thanks for being the chief “cook” and organizer of our faculty “Steak Fry” at the end of each year. A great tradition to end the school year and laugh with fellow teachers.
Hugs and special thoughts of endearment to Linda and Phil. Take care.

The comments given here say it all. Dale was a outstanding character who made everyone who came into contact with him feel better. I was part of the group that played cards with him for around 35 years, and it was always a pleasure to see him come in to play. Rest in peace.

Huebner family, my sincere condolences to the loss of Dale and belated condolences to loss of Dianne of which they were outstanding educators to me. May God rest their souls as well as Helen. I will remember them in my prayers. Phillip J. Janowski, Town of Hull (Stevens Point), WI.

We cannot remember a time when being with Dale was not a fun time.
Coaches’ Steak Fries were a hit with all at the end of a school year when Dale and cronies dealt out their faculty “roasts.”
Christmas and New Year gatherings at our homes were wonderful.
Dale was remarkable! Rest In Peace, good friend.

Condolences, Linda and Phil. Your father was one of my favorite teachers/coaches in my life. He taught me how to drive a manual transmission vehicle with patience and calm. I’m thankful he had a positive impact on my life. Celebrate with certainty the positive impact he had on so many others. God bless.

Dale was an inspiration and a mentor during the many years we worked together. He was also a very dear friend and we went down many paths together and allied often to work together to provide the best opportunities we could for the students at SPASH.
He had tremendous rapport with the many students he interacted with in the classroom and the athletic field. His lasting legacy is that he had a positive impact on so many.
On a personal note Dale was one of my very best friends the past 50 years and we shared many great times together. I have missed him these past several years while his memory issues took him away from us, but continued to love his friendship and respect his achievements in a life well lived. Incidentally, he was a very good poker player too. When I retired Dale gave me a 12 yr, old bottle of Scotch, I never opened it and it is now a 30 yr. old bottle of Scotch. I will have one on you now Dale. Salute! And when we meet again its "Guts duces wild" and we are both holding an ace! I still have some jokes for the steak fry too,
Linda and Phil, you have my and Marge's deepest sympathy. Your Dad was a wonderful man and a great friend.

Mr. Heubner used to "help me out" in softball so I could actually get to a base! He used to yell at me over the Intercoms during "range" in drivers ed and tell me "Graboski, you wouldn't know which way to go on a balance beam" because I had no sense of direction and was a gymnast. He was a great teacher.

Dale,Diane,Linda, and Phil were dear friends! Summer softball games and an annual corn roast at their home with many teaching faculty and friends were great times! Linda surprising us on May Day and disappearing before we could catch her will never be forgotten! We watched Phil excell in sports in high school, following in his fathers footsteps. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dale’s family from the Glock’s in Plover

Mr. H was one of my favorite HS teachers. I loved his PE classes and his sense of humor. I remember a faculty basketball game against The Green Bay Packers. Coach Huebner tried a two handed “set shot” (very old school) and just missed. The Packers player asked for the ball and gave it back to coach to try it again and then he sank the long set shot!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Your dad was such a kind man. I had him for Phy Ed and drivers ed. I can still hear him say things as I'm driving. He will be missed by many.
