I realize this may be odd but I´m compelled to write something. I´ve just now - almost 15 years later - learned of Charlie´s passing. Clearly we weren´t close but I am very sad to learn about this. Charlie was about 4 or 5 years older than me growing up. As kids, it´s a big difference, and he probably wouldn´t have remembered me as adults. However, to me, he was an idol. He was good-looking, charming, kind, smart, a great athlete, and best of all...real. He was friends with my good friend´s older sister so I got to spend a little time with him every now and then. We both attended Country Day but aside from cheering him on in football or something, that wasn´t a setting where we crossed paths often. Very few people in my life have made the impression he did on me. Even now, in my 50s I still think of him from time to time almost in a "what-would-Charlie-do" kind of way. I sincerely hope this (very) late message doesn´t land awkwardly because my only intention is to honor Charlie in the highest order and share my love and deepest condolences with his family, especially his children and their mother. Charlie is held in a very special way by many who may well be strangers to you. I, personally, feel a lot of gratitude to have had the proximity that I had to him, and to have had him as a role model.
From the bottom of my heart.

Dearest Katy, Charles, Teddy and Francis, I am profoundly and forever changed for being welcomed into your family...as your nanny and as a friend. I will always remember Charlie's gregarious personality and playfulness with the boys. I loved watching him with Katy on their way out the door....so smitten, so in love, so delighted to be out with his honey. He always had a twinkle in his eye and a readiness to chat when I arrived. Hugs were always a part of the scenario. Charlie, you will be missed dearly....I still hear your laughter ringing in my ears. Love & Prayers Always, nanny julie

Katy and Charles became valued members of our community at the School of the Madeleine. They were most supportive of the education of their children and worked toward enriching the school plant.
Katy, you and the boys will be remembered in our prayers as you face this most difficult time.

A truly outstanding man who touched so many lives in his relatively short time in Portland, Oregon, Charlie will be greatly missed by many here. Every one of us knew him for his beautiful smile, his authentic, ever-interested connectedness with people, and his love for and dedication to his family. We will all do our best to support Katy and the boys in any ways we can . . .

Charles was a genuinely fine, gentile, loving young man. He managed to communicate with four generations in our family and became a very dear friend. He adored his family and loved to share the good family fun with others.
You, Katy and the children will be in our thoughts in these difficult days. Charles will not be forgotten especially his humor and compassion.
