I met Jim back 2002 through his NOVA program. I learned a great deal of information from Jim. He helped me be come the man I am today. And through his program I met my wife and we have been happily married since 2006. I was just thinking about him and I decided to do a search online. I'm sorry to hear that he passed. He was a good man. I will always remember what he taught me.

Jim Whetzel was a dear friend whom I hadn't seen in far too long. I will always remember him. I cherish the memories of the time spent with him and the intangibile and tangible gifts he gave me, including two turned bowls.

My uncle was a gentle and larger than life individual. He was extremely talented and shared that talent with everyone around him. He loved his family very much. I cherish every memory, and there are many, as well as every piece of his labor of his talent with wood that I have. As I go through pictures, I see where he has taught me a lot through the years. This man loved me so much when I was little, he shaved his beard off because I was afraid of it. He loved everyone that way, with all he had. Uncle Jim, my sweet uncle, you will be missed!!

After spending most of his life in Missouri, Jim moved to South Carolina to live with his dearly loved brother, Charles. He left behind cherished friends in St. Charles, whom he loved, and who loved and respected him as a compassionate and joyful member of the community. Jim was a business owner for many years and regularly participated in events throughout St. Charles County, including many on Main Street in Old Town, St. Charles.

Jim was a counselor, poet, artist, and musician, who loved to share his talents unreservedly. He loved to learn to play new instruments and worked with wood for most of his adult life, from building houses to turning on his lathe. Many friends and family will enjoy his finely crafted work for many years to come. Those who knew Jim will benefit from the knowledge he shared and the confidences he earned.

He loved trying exotic food and spices, but his greatest times were spent making simple cookies and laughing with his kids. He started this tradition the minute they could hold cookie cutters, and continued it at every chance he had thereafter. He often said that the sweetest sounds on earth were those of his children's giggles. Jim also loved to play cribbage, garden, read, tell jokes, watch thunderstorms roll in, and when he was younger, act on stage.

James Kenneth Whetzel is survived by his siblings, Charlene, Charles, Judy, and Toni, his children, Rose and Genghis, and many in-laws who he considered as dear as blood relations. His love and pride for nieces, nephews, first, second, and third cousins; indeed all in his extended family, was resolute and boundless. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you give your time, money and love to those people and organizations you care about, as Jim felt that individual passions and love is humanity at its best.

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty
And frightened. Don't open the door to the study
And begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.

There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground. - Rumi
