Sophie Connor Obituary

Connor, Sophie Ciola

October 23, 1935 - August 1, 2025

The World Was Her Garden.

Beloved wife of James W. Connor, mother, step-mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend, benefactor, and Master Gardener passed away peacefully.

Sophie was born in Orange, Connecticut. She taught algebra at Holy Redeemer School, volunteered at The Missouri Botanical Garden, and was a member of The Webster Groves Garden Club and numerous other local organizations. She loved to garden, cultivate friendships, and share her joy for life wherever she went.

In keeping with her wishes, services will be private. Sophie asked that you do something that brings you joy while thinking of her.

Sophie had a genuine warmth and caring about her in all she did. She was an artful floral arranger, and a fun and kind conversationalist. She will be missed by many in the Webster Groves Herb Society.

I´m sorry for your loss. I didn´t know Sophie well only from attending ECD meetings with her. I´m the ECD treasurer. She will be missed

Sophie worked with me when I was teaching second grade in Holy Redeemer PSR, and she gave me a small volume of the English translation of short poems based on the biblical story of Noah´s ark. I still have it, and I used it when teaching fourth grade in another parish school. It was a wonderful way to encourage students to use clues in the poem to decide which animal was praying. Mostly, I remember Sophie as calm, gentle, and generous with her time. A true gentlewoman.

My Aunt Sophie was always in my corner. We lived in different parts of the country and didn't see each other often but we kept in touch. When I became a widow she was there to help me make that transition. Now she's back with Uncle Jim and all the Ciolas who have gone before. I can only imagine the wonderful reunion. May they all rest in peace. Please save me a place at your table. I'll see you down the road. My condolences to Ben, Tim, Becky and Shane.

Awe, I´m saddened to hear of this! I know Sophie had been in the hospital & rehab recently! She was a neighbor of mine on Hawthorne & we have reconnected several times in the past but most recently, in Webster Groves Garden Club.... She did bring light to all she met and was a "peacemaker" speaking up recently at a Garden Club meeting when the discussion was getting heated up.....she WILL surely be missed!

My Family and I would Like to inform all who read the end of Sophie's obituary that "To Plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store." is an advertisement and not a request of Sophie or her family. Sophie and family would be delighted if you plant a tree, flowers, and or plant in her memory. However we are not encouraging the use of the unsolicited paid advertisers services.

I met Sophie at an ECD function and was immediately impressed by her gentle nature and sincereness. I met her again when I joined the Webster Grove Herb Soc. and enjoyed her company over the Years. I will miss my friend very much.
