George and Frances were active members of St. Alphonsus Church in Ocean Springs. After retiring from teaching, Frances continued to be an organist for three churches. George and Frances were also long time members of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, attending monthly meetings in New Orleans. For the past few years, she attended daily and Sunday Mass at both St. James Catholic Church in Corinth, Mississippi and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Savannah, Tennessee.

Survivors include her children, Harry Paul Horner, Teresa marie Horner Decker, Jean Alliene Marie Horner Buck, Marian Frances Horner Poulos, Joan Marie Horner Fullwood, thirteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The family requests donations to Frances' favorite charities: Priests for Life and EWTN.

Early in my education I had some educational challenges with writing. I was somewhat dyslectic and had a bit of AAD resulting in a failing grade in 10th Grade English that required Summer School, where I had the good fortune to be under the tutelage of Ms. Francis Jennet Horner, for a summer semester. I thought that she was a brutal taskmistress. I was relived when the semester was done. When I returned to school in the Fall, and was given my class schedule, I was surprised to find that my 11th Grade English teacher was again She of the no nonsense "you will learn to do this correctly". I completed that year with her. The next year when others were failing senior English I was holding a "B" average. To me it was a miracle. She had saved me, given me tools that I use to this day. I can close my eyes and see her red hair and blue framed rose colored glasses. When writing I think of her often. I will always be in her debt her and remember her fondly.

Dear family, I am sorry for you loss. Mrs. Horner was strict but as her assistant in my senior year at BHS, she was wonderful and to this day remains my favorite teacher.

Mrs. Frances Horner was the most compassionate, yet authoritative teacher who kept one on their toes. She was such an inspiration to me in my Senior year of high school and I will never forget all she taught me and help forge my career in the medical field with her teachings and giving all who were open to learning so we could make better people of ourselves. I am so very happy for Mrs. Horner's quick flight into the Almighty God's hands with great glee and happiness. I know that the entire family will miss her knowledgeable tenacity and the wonderful person she was. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Mrs. Horner. Penny Pemberton Spivey

The best thing that came out of "Katrina" was the relocation of "Mama" Frances Horner. At St. Mary Church where she attended daily Mass, she made many new friends and taught us the values of the Catholic Church. She brought inspiration and knowledge to our classes and prayer groups. She never stopped learning or stopped sharing. She is missed every day and will always be remembered with love. Joy Dicksen

I had the honor of being in Ms. Horner's English Class at BHS in 1971. I found her to be challenging but I loved her class, and I credit her with teaching me the skills I needed to exceed in professional life. She was always fair and gave praise where it was due. I feel so much richer for having had her influence in my young life.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Mrs. Horner was not my favorite teacher while I was in high school, but she was my best teacher. She was strict, and I didn't appreciate her until I graduated from college and became an English teacher. We need more like her. Thank you! Anne (Nichols) Reynolds

Dear Family,
Just wanted to let you know Mrs. Horner had a profound affect on my life. She taught me Latin I&II and Senior English during 1964-1966.She demanded so much from her students and wouldn't accept less. Once during 12th grade (nightly doing 6-7 hours of
homework) I explained to her that I couldn't get all my assignments done. With authority, sincerity, and that little smile of hers she said, "Do mine first, they're the most important!" Looking back, how right she was! So much of what she taught me I still have retained to this day. She wrote the book on "rigor" and "relevance" before they were popular buzz words in education.
In my life and education career, I have rarely seen any teacher who could match her academic excellence and never met one that even came close to setting the bar for learning that she did for all her students. Although I never had the opportunity to share this with her, thank God we'll meet again one day on the other side. :)
My deepest condolences to you, her family.
Requiescant in Pace suae carissimae S.P.D. Te amo !!!

I send my condolescences to Mrs. Horner's family and friends. I had the privilege of being one of her students in the fall semester of 1979. She was one tough teacher, and because of her, I am a great speller and possess an extensive knowledge of vocabulary words. I transferred to another school in the spring semester, but Mrs. Horner still gave me a very nice Cross pen as a graduation gift. She was a huge part of my life in such a small period of time. Rest in peace, Mrs. Horner. God bless you and your family and friends. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frances was my friend, mentor, and spiritual "Mother" for over 20 years. She taught me what it means to be a Carmelite. I will never forget the many retreats we attended together as well as our trips for other Carmelite functions. She was a very special "LADY" in every sense of the word, generous to a fault, and fair in her everyday dealings; a great believer in prayer, a great organist who played wherever anyone needed her. Nothing was too difficult for her to undertake, she rarely complained, or talked about herself. I loved this lady and she loved me. But now her "ship" has sailed for the "far shore" and she was greeted joyously by the Lord and her deceased family and friends. We'll miss you on this "shore", Frances, but God only takes the best. Pray for us.

Mrs. Horner was my English teacher in the 11th grade at Biloxi High in 1974. Every day we had a new list of vocabulary words and a test. Oh how we dreaded those tests, but how much we learned from them was incredible. She was a wonderful teacher who did so much to help me prepare for college and life. Thank you Mrs. Horner.

Mrs. Horner taught me Latin I & II at Biloxi High School in 1971 & 1972. She is one of the reasons I am a nurse. She will be remembered with such kind thoughts.

I am so sorry for your loss. She affected many students throughout the years, including my sister and me! The teachers we felt were the "hardest" were really the very ones who helped us along for the rest of our lives!I wish I could have thanked her, and may she rest in peace, Bebe Nichols

I was just about illiterate until I spent two summer school semesters and my Jr. year of high school in her class. For the past 40+ years I have made my living as a Marine Surveyor by inspecting marine equipment and writing cogent critical reports thereon. I could never have done that without her influence upon my life.

I was fortunate to know Mrs. Frances during the 80s and 90s when I worked at the Ocean Springs Nursing Facility. She made a lasting impression as one of the most caring and Christian persons I have ever encountered. As a Eucharistic Minister of St. Alphonsus, she brought communion almost daily to the Catholic residents there. She also spent many hours of her time visiting and bringing a little sunshine into many lives of all denominations. I consider it a privilege to have known her.

Mrs Horner taught me the latin origins of words at Central Jr. High School in Biloxi. I tell my kids and grandkids today, that although I was scared of her, teaching me the origins of words from latin roots has helped me throughout my life. So sorry for your loss!

My grandmother was a great woman and a devout Catholic. She will be dearly missed in this world, but she greeted her family and the Lord with a big smile on her face. Caput was an inspiration to everyone she meet including myself and my family. We love you Caput and God Bless you.
