John "Jack" Toal obituary, 1942-2023, Fort Lauderdale, FL

John Toal Obituary

John (Jack) Toal passed peacefully at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 15, 2023, after a lengthy illness with his loving wife, Pamela at his side.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has lost a legend and it is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of retired New York Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) John (Jack) Toal. Born on December 9, 1942, Jack grew up in Woodside, Queens, a place he proudly valued, and would always consider home. Jack graduated from St. John's University in 1964, and began his career in government service with the US Army, 1st Calvary Division from 1967-1969, with a tour in Vietnam, and then entering the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs and later DEA in 1969 in the New York Field Division. Jack went on to hold management positions during his career in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and DEA Headquarters before returning to DEA/NY as an ASAC, where he retired in 1996. Jack loved being a DEA Agent, and was well respected by his colleagues. Post retirement, Jack relocated back to Fort Lauderdale, embarking on a successful 20 year, investigative/consulting career.

Jack was fiercely passionate about politics, drinking good wine with good friends, and spent way too many years lamenting about the Mets needing to get their act together. Jack was famous for a lot of things; infamous for others. But most importantly, he was loved by his family he leaves behind: his wife Pamela, his dog Molly, step-daughter Danielle Gilbride and her husband John, his grandchildren Kaitlin and Brian, his nephew Bryan Shea, his niece Meredith Carrillo, and countless friends who he considered family. There will a Catholic Mass on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at 10 AM at St. John the Baptist, 4595 Bayview Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL, followed by a celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the DEA Survivors Benefit Fund, or a no kill animal shelter.

Jack was a true stalwart for BNDD/DEA during the 70s in New York. The best for friends, and the worst for his criminal foes. Throughout his career, case after case carried the name of Jack Toal. He was one of a kind. Our condolences go out to Pam and the Toal family.

Jack was a gem, an agent of extraordinary talent...if you needed a backup it was Jack you wanted...although we lost time over our careers (jacks) I hooked up with Jack in South Florida...Jack continued to monitor threats against me by certain NY mob guys right to the end...I cannot say enough about Jacks investigative ability...he will be missed by all...rest in peace Jack and enjoy your second career in heaven...you deserve it!

My deepest sympathy to Jack´s family.
To many of us are leaving this earth to soon and leaving behind fond memories and families. We were not the Greatest Generation but we will be remembered as true Patriots who served in Vietnam, and many continued to serve their country ... like Jack. Jack did his part well and will be remembered by his DEA family forever. RIP Jack!

I first met Jack as a newly minted agent just out of training, reporting to the New York Field Division.
Jack was a very caring individual with excellent investigative skills.
He had many friends who would sorely miss him.
Pam and family, please accept my heartfelt condolences and prayers.

Jack and I were in BNDD 6 together September 1969. We were both recent returnees from Vietnam, he with the 1st Cav, me with the 101st Abn Division. (Many stories) worked together and stayed in touch over the years. One of the good guys.

Too many mutual adventures to recall. Double entendre intentional. A man of unconditional loyalty to friends of whom there were legions. Dedicated to DEA to the end. Encyclopedic memory of TOC figures. Simply a great guy.
