Dr. Marcus J. Zbar

Marcus Zbar Obituary

Zbar, Dr. Marcus J., a prominent South Florida Pathologist, passed away October 1, 2006 at the age of 79. He was the kindest, most generous, intelligent and caring person we have had the privilege to know. Dr. Zbar was born and raised in Tampa, FL and lived in South Florida for the past 52 years. He was exceptionally brilliant, hardworking and loved to learn. He graduated magna cum laude at the College of Charleston and summa cum laude at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where he was awarded the Founder's Medal. He was an intern at Vanderbilt and later became a Chief Resident and instructor in Pathology at both Vanderbilt and Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Zbar had a private pathology practice in South Florida for the next 45 years where he oversaw pathology labs in several area hospitals. He became Chief of Staff at Aventura Hospital and later was appointed Pathologist Emeritus by both Aventura Hospital and the South Broward Hospital District. Dr. Zbar was also a former member of the Board of Directors of Community Blood Centers of South Florida. He was board certified in Anatomic and Clinical pathology, Dermatopathlogy and Quality Assurance. In his leisure time, he loved scuba diving and exploring the oceans around the world. As a member of the Explorers Club, Dr. Zbar often lectured about his diving adventures and his travels to far and exotic regions of the globe. He also enjoyed boating, bicycling, running, camping, mountain climbing and photography. He is survived by his loving wife, Muriel Zbar, his children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and cousins. He will always be loved and missed. Please make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society or 1000 Plus Club of the American Cancer Society and Southeastern University Royal Dames of Cancer Research. My personal and professional relationship with Marcus goes back many, many years, as well as our times together. Whether it was doing Judo, Medicine or just having plain fun, he shall never be forgotten. Marcus was the always the best at whatever he did. He will always be remembered and may the good Lord use his talents in the great beyond as he did on this earth. Remember the Jazz. Love and Sympathy to Muriel and the family. We are saddened by the loss of Marcus. Both of us were close to him, and we learned much about the importance of friendship and mutual fun activities. He was a learned man, wise in science and antiquities as well as street-smarts. We have always had the highest respect for Marcus and will always remember him with love.

Dr. Zbar was a close family friend to my parents as I was growing up. I'm sorry that I hadn't seen him in many years, because I never got to tell him what a special influence he was in my life. I am an avid scuba diver and my desire for underwater adventures grew from his friendship (and from Jacques Cousteau, of course.) His slide shows, stories and artifacts he brought back from the exotic and distant seas around the world mesmerized me. I wanted to be just as adventurous, just as traveled. He inspires me to this day, each time I dive the local waters or dive the next locale on my long list of destinations. I'm sending these thoughts, and my very warm and heartfelt condolences to his family.

I grew up with Marcus in Tampa. Although we have not been in touch for many years I remember him, even as a child, having all the qualities set out in the obituary. I send my sympathy to his family in their loss of this good man.
