Richard Neubauer Obituary

Neubauer , Richard A., M.D. , Pioneer in the Use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Neurologic Conditions, dies at 83. Richard Allen Neubauer, M.D., internationally recognized pioneer in the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for a variety of neurologic and related disorders, died on June 11, 2007. He remained active with research and clinical work until the last few weeks of his life and died at his home in Pompano Beach, FL. Dr. Neubauer became interested in potential applications of HBOT during the early 1970s, at which time he acquired a hyperbaric oxygen chamber. He went on to establish and direct the Ocean Hyperbaric Neurologic Center in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL, where he treated people coming to the Center from throughout the world. His research and clinical practice led to the conclusion that with a hyperbaric chamber, pressurized oxygen could be provided to damaged central nervous system neurons and help restore their function. Among the conditions researched and treated at the Center have been multiple sclerosis, near drowning, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, anoxic encephalopathy, coma, and stroke. A recent focus has been the treatment of severely afflicted children with mitochondrial diseases. His international reputation led to invitations to speak at numerous scientific meetings throughout the world. His travels as a lecturer on hyperbaric medicine included Europe, Asia, Africa, South American, and Australia. He also hosted six international hyperbaric oxygen symposia in South Florida. He was the author of Hyperbaric Oxygenation for Cerebral Palsy and the Brain Injured Child: A Promising Treatment and was co-author of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. He has appeared on The Today Show, The Discovery Channel and countless national and international news broadcasts. He also wrote numerous book chapters and scientific articles on the treatment of neurologic conditions with hyperbaric oxygen. His letters and articles appeared in many scientific journals, including JAMA, Lancet, Stroke, The New England Journal of Medicine, The British Medical Journal and American Family Physician. Dr. Neubauer was dedicated to advancing knowledge about the potential of HBOT and he personally trained many physicians from around the US and multiple other countries. As a result, many patients even in the far corners of the world have benefited from this safe and effective type of therapy. He was a native of Wilmington, DE. He attended the College of William and Mary, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honorary society. He completed his medical training at the University of Virginia in 1947 and was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha (honorary medical). He was involved in research and clinical medical practice in Wilmington and Philadelphia before relocating with his family to South Florida in 1962. There he developed a thriving practice in internal medicine and was instrumental in the establishment of Beach Hospital (later Cleveland Clinic) in Fort Lauderdale where he served as Chief of Staff and Director of Medical Development. Among his many honors was his election to the Royal Society of Medicine. He was a founder of the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine and a member of the World Federation of Neurology Executive Committee on Underwater Medicine. He is survived by the love of his life, his inspiration and his soul mate; his wife of 61 years, Winnie "Winkie" Isabelle Neubauer; four children, Richard Allen Neubauer, Jr. of Marysville, CA, David N. Neubauer of Baltimore, MD, Virginia Isabelle Neubauer Reilly of Margate, FL, and Marion Elizabeth Neubauer of Fort Lauderdale, FL; as well as two grandchildren, Rebecca Lynne Neubauer and Robert Martin Neubauer, living in Maryland.

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

My memories of Dr. Neubauer are held in the most highest esteem. I have known him for at least a decade with the privilege of being his medical secretary & transcriptionist for several years. He has been a guiding angel in my life; a "godsend." It was because of his unselfishness, that I was able to endure hardship that was brought on during my years of undergraduate studies. He gave me one of several scholarship awards and letters of recommendation for medical school that resulted in me being the Medical Doctor that I am today. With him, I made my first publication in the medical literature regarding Hyperbarics. For these accomplishments, I will always be grateful not only to him, but also to his family who have been of great support to him. My sympathy goes out to his entire family. Most of all, I thank my God on every thought of Dr. Neubauer and of him, I shall forever have precious memories. He is my hero, my mentor, and my greatest physician!

Coming up on Uncle Dicks memorial I wanted to express my sincere condolences to the family. I grew up with Aunt Winkie and uncle Dick in Bel Air Isles. I was a friend of their daughter Marion who I miss very much! I always loved weekends in Del Ray with the family going to the swap ahop and to Shirt Tail Carleys where Uncle Dick had me eat cheddar cheese soup. They were like my own family. My dad (Ralph Micahels) saw Uncle Dick and Aunt Winkie right before he(uncle Dick) got ill but never got to see them again. Dad is the one that told me about his passing. He was a nice man and loved classical music and smoking his pipe..that's what i remember..
Sincerely

Dr.Neubauer was the one I found for treatment of hyperbarics for my TBI. He made my brain turn on like a light bulb. I think of him often for giving me my live back and just found out of his passing and am deeply saddened for his family. Meeting him was such a blessing to me and now I continue speaking his vision for awakening dorment brain neurons through hyperbaurics and represent this concept as an advisor for the Ohio State Rehabilitation Center in Columbus,Ohio.

To the family of Dr. Neubauer:

I am saddened by the loss of Dr. Neubauer. I have an 8 year old granddaughter who has cerebral palsy. She has benefited greatly from HBOT. Please know our family is deeply involved with our local Regional Center Association(for the disabled)and have promoted this treatment. It is our hope it will one day be recognized by insurance companies as a "first line" treatment. At 3 years old Caitlin could not sit up or talk. After 40 HBOT treatments she sat up - after another 40 she started talking. She received this treatment at Ability Camp in Picton, Ontario, Canada. She is mainstreaming third grade now and does remarkably well. She just received a "Star Reader" award. I am forever grateful to Dr. Neubauer for promoting this useful therapy.

We parents in the MUMS National Parent-to-Parent Network are all saddened by the death of Dr. Neubauer. He was a true pioneer in the field of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and was especially instrumental in expanding the treatment of off-label conditions, such as brain damage, stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Autism and many other conditions. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude for the thousands of children and adults worldwide who have improved using HBOT because of his courage to go against the medical system.

Back in 1995 he treated two girls from Wisconsin who had Cerebral Palsy. Their improvements inspired me to get HBOT for my daughter, Jessica. Thanks to him Jessica can now stand with her feet flat and apart, she can say five words, can eat orally again, can use her right hand, has logical reasoning skills, understands cause and effect, has a job and is so very much less autistic.

I will always be indebted to him and he will be missed by so many.

We parents must carry the torch and continue to fight for HBOT for brain injury and Autism in his honor.

The family has my deepest sympathy. As my closest cousin, we shared our lives thru grade school, Boy Scouts, high school and more than a few experiences and escapades as adolescents. As the years passed, we grew apart, but we always remembered each other's birthdays. I applauded his success as a doctor and always enjoyed our few visits in Florida. His death is a great loss to our family, and to the medical profession

I am so very sad to hear and to feel the passing of Richard Neubauer. That message strokes me down. I never forget all his warmheartedness, great excellence and enthusiasm in all fields of HBOT, specially in stroke and brain injury. Nevertheless, we his friends here at the Leipzig University, Saxony, Germany, are going to continue Dr. Neubauer's work and ideas concerning HBOT in Neurology with always remembering to the wonderful personage of Richard. With great sadness but love... and I am sure I see you again in the future.

I never met Dr Neubauer personally, yet he made a big impact on my daughters life. All of the research, books and his dedciation to helping brain injured children helped me in the decision to do Hyperbaric Oxygen. My prayers go out to the family.

Our hyperbaric center in Hawaii did not accept neurological patients until we started following Dr. Neubauer's research and attending his international conferences. Because of his work, we now treat hundreds of children every year with neurological injuries, and they are recovering because of Dick's pioneering work. He was a lovely man who will be sorely missed, but forever remembered by so many.

To Dick, my Friend and Mentor:
I can't thank you enough for the honor of 15 years of professional sharing and friendship. As I said to you on June 3rd, you are a great man and physician, not only for your contribution to science and medicine, but for your gentle kindness and the thousands of lives that you have improved with HBOT. To the end of my life I will extoll and champion your accomplishments. See you one day in the future. Paul G. Harch, M.D.

God saw that you were suffering and a cure was not to be,

so he put his arms around you and whispered

"come with me"

through tear filled eyes we watched you suffer and slowly fade away.

although we loved you deeply we could not make you stay.

a golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest,

God broke our hearts to prove to us he only takes the best.

I will miss you!

Dr. Neubauer was one of the finest men I've ever known. His work has touched and improved innumerable lives - including my own. And his spirit of independence and resilience has inspired many - including me.

We went to Dr. Neubauer with a broken child, and we came home with a changed child who had a future and lot's of hope!

Rebecca Nemeth is now going on 12 years old, and has a great life, full of wonderful activities and attends regular school because of Dr. Neubauer's help.

Few heroes will have a greater legacy than the THOUSANDS of children who, like Rebecca gained a little bit more ability and a lot more hope in their lives.

Like it is sung, "No man stands so tall as when they bend over to help a child!"

Dr. Neubauer fought many battles at great sacrifice for our kids, and bent over every day to help them.

Dr. Neubauer, we love you and can't wait to see you in heaven!

Blessings,

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I was a lonely voice in India, shouting to say that brain-damaged children deserve a second chance through brain repair using HBOT-based regimens. It took someone like Dr. Neubauer to recognize the worth of UDAAN's study. Today, we are organizing NR2CON to proudly announce the arrival of the era of brain repair in India. We salute you, Dr. Neubauer.

no title (I’ll count them for a while, anyway)

My hair will be grey
But my soul so alive
My eyes won’t go far
But inside I won’t stop

“Just a rotten old man!”
Wrong! I’ve not given up
This fight will continue
And the beauty go on

I will still see all your splendor
My God, for oh so many years
Here longer than most,
I will know your planet
Know just like my wrinkles-and my cane

It will grow into me,
As I age beside it
I will have made the most-of this life my Lord
Thank you for this right and for the right’s growth - my God, for oh so many years
{and I’ll count the grey ones}
