RITA NETTINA Obituary

NETTINA, RITA MARCHIONE, died peacefully at home on September 30, 2015 after a short, brave battle with pancreatic cancer and heart disease. Rita was born in Buffalo, NY, the 4th daughter of Teresa Calandra and Oreste Marchione. After high school, she completed secretarial school and worked at Benton Announcements, where she developed a specialty answering etiquette questions by mail (maybe the original "Miss Manners") and met her future husband Richard Nettina. Together they started The Great Lakes Printing Company, a successful Buffalo-area commercial printing business, which they sold in 1963 to relocate to Hollywood, Florida, They then bought the Little River Press in Miami, FL, and together built this into a highly respected printer & publisher with over 35 valued employees and where Rita worked as bookkeeper & financial manager into her 70s. When Rita & Richard weren't busy working, they devoted their energy and many talents to taking care of their children and extended family and participating in Nativity Parish and Chaminade High School activities. Rita was an especially devoted mom, sister, aunt, grandmother (grammy), great-grandmother, and friend. She spent her life showing her love with a lively sense of humor, practical & honest advice, warm hospitality, compassion and humility, sharp business acumen, unforgettable pasta sauce, and an unceasing production of cookies. You knew she loved you if she called you "Dolly". Rita gave us her best until the end, and will be missed forever by all of those who were fortunate enough to have basked in the glow of her warm, humble, funny, tough, energetic and spirited personality. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oreste & Teresa Marchione of Chieti, Italy and Buffalo NY; her beloved husband for 50 years, Richard P. Nettina; her grandson Vincent Young; her sisters Florence Ventresco and Virginia Derry; and her brothers John, Armando, and Edward Marchione. She is survived by her children Rosemarie Schadae (Peter) of Walchwil, Switzerland, Teresa Young (Rod) of Plantation, FL, Richard Nettina Jr. (Jan) of Hollywood, FL, and Kathleen Mazzei (Tom) of Boynton Beach, FL; former son-in-law Guy P. Sanderson of Fullerton, CA; her sisters Marie Schreiner, Ann Baldessari (Julio), and Frances Pinto (Sam), all of Buffalo, NY; 11 adored and adoring grandchildren; 14 treasured great grandchildren; and numerous devoted nieces and nephews. The family especially appreciates the respectful, kind, and compassionate care given by Dr. Scott Kalina, Barbara Henriques, R.N. and the Jade Team of Trust Bridge Hospice during Rita's last few months. The family warmly welcomes visitors to the Landmark Funeral Home at 4200 Hollywood Boulevard, on October 2, 2015 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 9:00pm which will include a prayer service at 7:30pm. The funeral Mass will be on October 3, 2015, 10:00am at Nativity Catholic Church, 5220 Johnson St., Hollywood, FL. followed by entombment at Fred Hunter Memorial Gardens located at 6301 Taft Street, Hollywood, FL. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Our Lady of Victory Homes of Charity, Buffalo, NY (www.homesofcharity.org) or the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation (www.npcf.us). My love and prayers are with all of you at this very sad time. I remember that your mom shared the same birthday with Linda and I, Oct. 6th. May God bless all of you as you honor your mom's memory.

The dear mother of my treasured friend, Rosemarie, was one of a kind. In another time, she might have been President! As it was, her contributions to the world were varied and meaningful. No one was a stranger in her home, and certainly no one ever left without being stuffed with delicious Italian goodies. She will be missed.
