Thomas Byrd Obituary

BYRD Byrd, Thomas E., 68, died on October 28. He was the grandson of Ft. lauderdale pioneers Robert E. and Annette Dye, and son of Curtis and Ruth Dye Byrd. He was born in Ft. Lauderdale and was graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School. An avid Gator fan, he received his B.A. and law degrees from the University of Florida. He served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1962. Then he returned to Ft. Lauderdale and, like his father before him, entered into the practice of law. Predeceased by his parents and brother, Robert, he is survived by his sons, Thomas E., Jr., of Los Angeles, CA, and Mason (Nora) of Palmyra, VA, and his sisters, Marilyn (Reed) Payne of Ft. Lauderdale and Carol (Karsten) Rist of Miami. Service at St. Mark the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 1750 E. Oakland Park Blvd, Friday, November 1 at 1PM. In his memory the family suggests making a donation to the University of Florida Law School Annual Fund, the Law Center Association, P.O. Box 117620, Gainesville, FL 32611.

I was sorry to hear of Mr. Byrd's passing....It was always a pleasure to see him at the pool or track to hear him talk about Ft.Lauderdale history. He had a wry, almost Britanic sense of humour, which when rendered in that inimitable baritone, illuminated his uniqueness....

Tom and I both swam on the FLHS swimming team under Coach Tom Lamar. When I got out of the Marines, he put me to work at CZ&B -- where he taught me so much. He was the quintessence of what a lawyer and a father should be. Garie and I will miss you, Tom.

I've known Tom for five years, during my tenure with the University of Florida Foundation and Alumni Association. He was a true gentleman, an asset to both the community and the Gator Nation. He will be missed by all of us who know the value of refined and caring people.

Tom Byrd affected my life in so many ways. When I moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1969 I went to work as his secretary at Carlisle, Zeiher & Byrd. He trained me to be a probate paralegal - actually, a specialist in those days. I worked with him on Eleanor Ritchey Estate - the dog estate - and it was exciting. He assisted me with the legal work to buy my duplex in 1971. He hosted my wedding reception at his duplex in Wilton Manors in 1972. When I had to work late, he would pick up my sons at the McGuiness School. He once showed up at Broward General Emergency Room when one of my sons had been hurt. I went with Tom when he formed Thomas E. Byrd & Associates in 1972 and was his office manager, as well his probate and real estate paralegal. I went through the planning and building of the Justice Building. I hosted his 40th birthday party at my home in Sunrise. He was a brilliant lawyer, a great man and a friend. I am deeply saddend by his passing. My sincere condolences to his family - especially Tommy and Mason

Sincerely,

Linda A. Spencer

I was just in Ft. Lauderdale to attend

the Class of 1952 50th Reunion and saw Tom at both dinners. I am deeply shocked. We attended Park Temple Methodist Church together back in the 50's. We send our sincerest condolences to the family.

Tom has left us with many wonderful memories. Our Ft. Lauderdale HS Swim Team would not have been the same without him and his younger sister, Carol. He was in our wedding in 1957 and added to that happy occasion. We lived in Atlanta but when I visited my parents, August and Lois Burghard, we would go by to visit and our sons and daughter enjoyed playing with Mason and Tom and their toys. It is very sad for me to think of Lauderdale without Tommy Byrd.

Fondly,

Jackie Burghard Griffith
