Bruce Cleare was my chemistry teacher at Leon High. I became his lab assistant one year and babysat for his children. In addition to encouraging my interest in science and participation in science fairs and clubs, he awakened a strong, lifelong effort to learn about different cultures and to travel as much as I could. Through him and his first wife, I got to know the Lewis family (close neighbors) better and felt more inspired to be active in civil rights. Both families set an example of humane ethics and belief in justice that has added to the optimism and hope for the future inspired by my parents.

Bruce was a true mentor in every way and certainly an unforgettable influence on my attitudes and life course. I would love to hear from his children or see a photo of them. Or have them look me up if they come to the Big Island of Hawaii.
