Claire Benjamin Obituary

Claire K. Benjamin Claire K. Benjamin (nee Bone), CPA, MSc, MBA, age 60, and Chief Financial Officer of Volunteer Florida passed away Friday, August 14th 2009 in Tallahassee after a yearlong battle against ovarian cancer. The viewing will begin at 9 a.m. EDT on Saturday August 22nd 2009, at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 1405 Melvin St., Tallahassee, FL 32301, with service to follow at 11 a.m. EDT. Mrs. Benjamin was born August 24th 1948 in Georgetown, Guyana, where she met and married Colin, her husband of 34 years. Together they led a rich life filled with a passion for learning and a love for helping others. Mrs. Benjamin was a devoted mother, an accomplished professional, a dedicated public servant and a loyal friend. Her unyielding courage and positive attitude in the face of her difficult fight with cancer was an inspiration to many. Professionally, Mrs. Benjamin had broad international experience in accounting and finance, implementing accounting information systems, and consulting in taxation in both developed and developing countries. Mrs. Benjamin served as an adjunct faculty member at several universities in the USA including University of Missouri-Rolla, Drury College, Flagler College, Tallahassee Community College and Florida A&M University, and also conducted business management training for professionals in developing countries. She specialized in non-profit organizations and the health care sector in the USA, starting with the Mercy Medical Group in St. Louis, Missouri. After moving with her family to Tallahassee, Florida in 1995, Mrs. Benjamin went on to hold the Chief Financial Officer position at Big Bend Hospice, Boys & Girls Club of the Big Bend, and The Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service (Volunteer Florida). Mrs. Benjamin had a great love of reading and plants, and was a dutiful member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Vestry, Episcopal Church Women and Altar Guild. She was also devoted to helping the less fortunate and took great pride in being a weekly contributor for the WFSU Radio Reading Service for the Blind. Mrs. Benjamin is survived by her three sons, Kareem of Dallas, TX, Zaheer of Orlando, FL, and Jamaal of Dallas, TX; father, Louis of Guyana; four siblings, Bonita of Guyana, Louis of Sacramento CA, George of Washington DC, and Lois of Tallahassee, FL; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Big Bend Hospice, an organization that Claire cared about and worked with for many years. I had the pleasure of being one of Claire's reading partners at WFSU. She was a beautiful person with a delightful personality. I know the listeners enjoyed hearing her lilting accent as much as I did. She always spoke fondly of her "big City" sons. You have my most sincere sympathy in your loss - your mother will be missed by many.

To Colin and your family. I worked with Claire and we had lunch together one afternoon in your Beautiful home. Claire was a Wonderful friend that I will never, ever forget. May God strenghten you during this very difficult time. God never makes a mistake and he wanted his daughter to come on home to live with Him. My family and I will continue to pray for you.

Claire hired me at Big Bend Hospice when I was in need of a good job for which I will always be grateful. Her wide smile and pleasant demeanor made working for her an uplifting experience. There will always be a warm place in my heart for this good woman. My condolences to her family; especially to her tall sons of whom she was quite proud.

Claire & I worked at Big Bend Hospice together in very different capacities but we never missed an opportunity to give each other a hug.She brought joy wherever she went. She loved her corner office because she could see nature outside her windows as she worked. She loves her family. I teased her about looking so nice.(She dressed impecably) I asked her "Does your husband know how good your looking today Claire? And he let you out of the house?" She would smile sweetly and laugh. She is an angel...always was one in my estimation.I will remember your family in my prayers.May God fill you with His peace.

Claire...........

It is difficult to explain what you meant to me; I will cherish the friendship we shared, and your loyalty to that friendship. Your mentoring helped to shape my life, and the kindness you showed towards me will never be forgotten. If I can express just half of the wisdom you shared with me to someone else, then I will have learned well what you taught me. I know God is smiling now, as he has received another one of his Angels home. Rest Claire.......I love you.

She, who has gone, so we but cherish her memory, abides with us, more potent, nay, more present than the living woman.

Remember to hold tight to your memories for comfort, lean on your friends for strength, and look to God for all understanding - for He does all things for a reason greater than we will ever know. With this, may the peace of loving memories that you have shared, comfort you now and in the time to come, when words seem inadequate to express the sadness that we all feel for this great loss.

One of the truest of good hearts - Claire, you will be missed. May the grace of God bless and keep you always. May you be at peace.

Words, however kind,
can't mend your heartache: ,
but those who care and ,
share your loss wish you,
comfort and peace of mind.,
May you find strength,
in the love of family,
and in the warm embrace,
of friends.,

She will always be remembered. I will never forget the first time I saw her beautiful smile! Claire was never to busy to listen and care about what was going on in my life. She was one of the sweetest and kindest women I have ever known. I loved her sense of humor, too. She loved to talk about her boys! With Love
