Dorris Belk Obituary
Dorris Lewis Belk passed away peacefully at the Osprey Village memory care center, Amelia Island Florida on March 10, 2014
Born near Havana, Florida to Leslie and Jessie Lewis on July 31, 1916 and raised in a family of three siblings, Dorris was typical of her generation. She graduated from Havana High School and became a legal secretary in Tallahassee where she met Billy Belk from south Georgia who was working at the Clerk's Office in the Courthouse.
She married H.J. (Billy) Belk in 1943 in Madison, Wisconsin. After his serving in Maine and South Carolina in the Navy, they settled on rural acreage near Tallahassee after the war and started a family.
She was the full-time mother to two, H. J. (Jack) Belk of Idaho and Janice Winkler of Jacksonville and grandmother and great-grandmother to a host of grandchildren.
She and Billy were founding members of the Burleigh Law class at St. Paul's Methodist Church and long time travel trailer enthusiasts that traveled the country and bicycled state parks with a large group of fish-frying and game-playing friends. Dorris continued to travel the world and completed the journeys that were planned but cut short by Billy's early demise to cancer in 1990. She was proud of the fact she had put her Ked tracks in the dirt of every state in the union, but North Dakota....and that was brought to her so she could claim all fifty.
Dorris was active and spry well into her nineties and continued to be an inspiration to all until fading rather quickly but gracefully, surrounded by loving family and friends. She leaves a large space but it's filled with pleasant memories.
Memorial services for family and friends will be at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Tallahassee on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please continue Dorris Belk's enthusiastic support of The Lighthouse Children's Home, 7771 Mahan Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32309, for which she had a special love and devotion.

Robin -- I was so sorry to her of "Grammy's" passing. She was quite a character and I know what a good influence she was on you in many ways -- her joie du vie and spontaneity especially. I know you'll miss her but have a lifetime of beautiful memories of your time spent with her. My sincere condolences on your loss.
