Maggie Stokes Obituary

Maggie Loretta Stokes Maggie Loretta Stokes, 85, of Monticello, FL, went Home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 27, 2010, in Monticello. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. EDT on Saturday, September 4, 2010, at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Monticello. Burial will follow at New Bethel (Madry) Cemetery. Viewing-visitation will be from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at TILLMAN OF MONTICELLO (850-997-5553). A native and lifelong resident of Jefferson County, Ms. Stokes was a retired teacher, having taught elementary students in the county for 38 years. She retired at the end of the 1989 school year. A staunch and devoted member of her family's home church, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist, Mrs. Stokes had served with distinction in almost every ministry in her church. She had served as a church school teacher; Bible Study scholar; choir member, and was a sponsor or co-sponsor of most fundraising programs held. She was also a member of the Heroines of Jericho, Tallahassee. A very stately and charming lady, Ms. Stokes was always immaculate in her personal appearance and in her home. Students she taught learned far beyond the classroom. She shared with them the importance of values and virtues to succeed in life. Among those she leaves to cherish her love and memory are her devoted sisters, Martha Stokes Hall, her confidant and caregiver, and Daisy Stokes Bowman, and her devoted sister-in-law, Emma Jane Wilson Stokes, all of Monticello, and a brother-in-law, James Seabrooks of Daytona Beach, FL; 31 nieces and nephews, along with numerous other relatives and friends. Ms. Stokes was the daughter of Amos and Daisy Bellamy Stokes and was one of 10 children. Her siblings, Amos K. Stokes, Linton P. Stokes, Louise S. Gibbs, Alice S. Webster, Leland S. Robinson, Ollie Mae S. Seabrooks, Mary S. Wright and Florrie Stokes, as well as her parents, all preceded her in death.

To Mrs. Hall and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. God smiled when He plucked this beautiful ROSE from His earthly garden, for He seen her looking up at Him for strength. You see God can give her what we couldn't. So, as God reached down to lift Her up, He said "Come home my child and I'll give you rest", You have fought a good fight, the war is over, now.

My friend in Christ Jesus Sister Maggie Stokes, I will miss your sense of humor and working in our home church, Pleasant Grove M.B. I know that you are sleeping, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. To the Stokes Family keep the faith and stay strong in the Lord. Love you all Sis. Eather Harrell-Hill.

Martha and family, I know your hearts are broken and you feel lost without your beautiful Maggie. She had the most profound influence on my development as a teacher. When she retired, I did not know if I would be able to teach without her in the
building with me. I valued and depended on her advice and guidance. She always had the answers I needed.
With prayer,
