Brian LaVIGNE Obituary

LaVIGNE, Brian Roy 54, of Valrico, FL, was killed in the line of duty with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office on January 11, 2021. He was a good man with integrity, strength and a great sense of humor. Born June 6, 1966, Brian was raised in upstate New York. He then moved to Florida in his sophomore year of high school where he met the love of his life, Cathleen. Brian began his 33 year long career in law enforcement with the Largo Police Department and he then joined the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in 1989. Brian was known for many things. He earned his brown belt in Jiujitsu this past Saturday, January 9, 2021. He also taught himself to speak Spanish fluently, was a certified Spanish translator, and was learning French. He taught himself the bagpipes and was in the process of learning the tin whistle, which was a gift he had received for Christmas. As an avid soccer fan, he not only enjoyed watching the sport, but he was also proud to have been a soccer coach for his kids as well as so many others. He was also a hometown Tampa Bay Lightning fan. Brian had a sense of adventure and loved to travel, and he also loved a properly poured Guinness. Brian is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth LaVigne in 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Cathleen Diane Russell LaVigne; children, Caitlin Teresa LaVigne and Erin Liam LaVigne; mother, Carol LaVigne; sister, Pamela Weyh; and brother, Kevin LaVigne and his wife, Evelyn. He will also be dearly missed by his in-laws; Susan (predeceased by husband, Stanley), Cynthia and her husband, William, and James and his wife, Connie. A funeral service to honor Master Corporal Brian LaVigne will take place at 11 am on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Idlewild Baptist Church located at 18333 Exciting Idlewild Blvd., Tampa, FL, 33548. Family will receive friends one hour prior. Blount & Curry Funeral Home Carrollwood www.blountcurrycarrollwood.com

There are no words to express the loss of such a wonderful person. I had the privilege to work with him while he served as an SRO at Mann Middle School, and will always remember our time together coaching the school's girls soccer team. I will always admire the compassion he showed for our students by treating them dignity and respect even when they were getting into trouble. He was an excellent role model for all of us. I am grateful to have had him as a friend: he made this world a better place for all of us.

Brian and I played in the BAYSL soccer league for five or six years together, even spending two seasons playing together on the same team. He was a good person and a good father. Always level headed. He will be missed.

Dear Erin, Cáitlin, and Cathy,

I was devastated when I heard about Brian. My heart is breaking. I have so many wonderful memories of coaching soccer with him and having Erin on our team. Brian was so gracious in allowing me to help coach his team. I feel so thankful to have had the opportunity to know Brian and your family.

My most sincere condolences to Brian's family. I worked with Brian for years prior to my retirement from HCSO and had several contacts with him over the last few .He was my son's first line supervisor who witnessed this tragic event. I cannot find the proper words to express my anger and sorrow at the lost of a friend like Brian and can only imagine the pain of his close family and friends. To all, my thoughts and prayer are with you and to HCSO family, stay strong!

A cop's cop. A father. A husband. A friend. I can't help but weep at the loss experienced by the community he served. Well done, Brian - for a life well-lived, but ended too soon. I grieve for your family, and give thanks for your service.
