David Lakus Obituary

Lakus, David

loving son, brother, uncle and friend died peacefully at his home in Cumming, Georgia, on March 12, 2025.

David was born on September 10, 1960, in St. Petersburg to the late Thomas Lakus and Betty Middaugh Lakus. David lived his entire life in St. Petersburg before moving to Georgia several years ago. From an early age, David was a talented athlete. He was a winner in the local punt, pass and kick competition when he was eight years old. He also excelled in baseball where he was an accomplished pitcher. Unfortunately, David's athletic career was cut short by a congenital back problem that was exacerbated by a motocross accident.

David had a deep love for music, particularly rock music. He was a talented guitarist and played in rock bands throughout his teens and twenties.

After graduation from Dixie Hollins High School, David studied electronics and worked for many years as an electronics technician. For several years he was a co-owner of an alarm installation business.

David had a passion for photography for which he displayed a natural affinity. His specialty was photographing race cars and he developed a great love for the sport of auto racing. At one point he owned an interest in a race car.

David was a gentle soul who loved and helped people and who took care of homeless animals.

David will be greatly missed by those who survive him, sisters, Mary Lakus (John Giannini) and Linda Lakus Harris (Mark); brother, Tom Lakus Jr. (Karen); and nieces and nephews, Margot Harris Weaver (Austin), Kimberly Lakus (Alex Smith), Michael Lakus (Mila Khalitova) and Jack Giannini (Julia).

The family will hold a memorial service for David in St. Petersburg later this year.

I am so sorry to hear the news of David's passing.

I had known David since we were eight years old as teammates at Azalea Little League, and our 11 & 12 year old teams were back to back league champs, due in part to David's pitching. We went to high school together, and then reconnected again in our late 20's once we realized we had a shared love of music. David helped me record my first few original songs, and he played lead guitar and keyboards on two of those songs. We played together as a duo as few times at Clancy's on Tyrone Boulevard in St. Pete.

We lost touch at some point and went our separate ways, as friends sometimes do. Life happens. But even in later years, whenever I played any of those early songs, I always thought of David.

Rest in peace, my friend.

My condolences, a lot of good times were spent with Dave on 29th ave, hanging out, shooting hoops and riding dirt bikes. Great memories.

Regards,
Scott Morten
