I was sorry to learn of John's passing. While I did not know him well , I appreciated what a great superintendent he was in the Fridley Schools. John made many real contributions to the development of schools in the metropolitan area. While he was an excellent financial manager, he never lost sight of how to use the financial resources of his district for the benefit of the children and young people he served. It was a privilege to know him and to enjoy him and Dorla Dean during their work in Fridley. May he rest in peace. John and Cathy Maas

When I joined Fridley Schools Dr. Hansen called me into his office and said he wanted to talk to me about my retirement. I had only been in the district about a month and had no plan of retiring so I was a bit taken aback...but I followed his request and went to meet with him...It seems he had reviewed my employment and learned that I had cashed out retirement funds in two former districts. I had done this as at that time not all the districts were in the same retirement organization as they are today and I had thought I would never return to those two districts. Well he said "You cashed in 7 years and I would advise you buy them back it will never cost you much and the benefit is great" I knew he was extremely knowledgeable in the finance area so I followed his advice. It allowed me to retire earlier for which I am ever so grateful. That doesn't mean I quit working it just means I was able to begin drawing on my retirement and what a gift he gave me. Thanks Dr Hansen...sincerly, D. Jo Gascoigne

John had some funny sayings and stories, always with a wry sense of humor and wisdom woven into them. He seemed to be a disciplined, financial wiz. His family was very important to him and he had computers and computer games before any mall and seemed to know much more than most people about all of it. He loved to share this with my kids when they were little and as they grew up. He was a born teacher with high values and we strived for him to be proud of us. He always meant to help people improve themselves. He had a great impact on many people, and I know his family has many good memories and stories to keep.

John Hansen was a man that I developed a great respect for. I served on the Fridley School Board for 9 years and learned to appreciate his intelligence, his integrity and his passion for education. He lead when appropriate and followed when required. His knowledge of school finance was outstanding.
On a personal note--I have benefited from John's knowledge of computers, especially Apple computers. He introduced me to Skype and to Kindle and we think of him every time we use either system. We shared a love of history and he recommended some interesting books as well as some of the research he had done revolving around North Dakota and his and Dorla Deen's family history.
I believe that John was one of those persons that made a positive difference in the lives of many people and will be missed. His legacy will remain for a long time. His values were impressive to me.
