Basil Foster Obituary

Basil Foster, 86, died on April 10, 2013. He was born in Downcaster, England, and came to the United States in 1978, and lived in Indiantown for 35 years. He served in the Veterinary Corps of the Royal British Army during World War II. He was based in Hamburg, Germany, to care for the horses and service animals commissioned for the war effort. He made his mark in the world of horse racing as a jockey, steeplechase rider and trainer. He won his first race at age 17, and went on to ride in four British National Championships. He was a trainer and manager of Holland House Stables in England's New Market racing. He worked in the Indiantown equestrian community. He was a mentor to many young jockeys, including his ward, Davy Jones of "The Monkees." Survivors include his sister, Doreen Drabble of North Wales; son, David Foster of Toronto; daughter, Susan Chiappa of Hamilton, Bermuda; his companion, Elaine Foster; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, George Foster; and his ward, Davy Jones. Services: Arrangements are by Martin Funeral Home & Crematory/Stuart Chapel.
