Ruth Jane Colpitts McDowell

Monticello, FL

Ruth Jane Colpitts McDowell of Monticello, FL died January 1, 2016, at the age of ninety-three. Ruth was born June 16, 1922 in Sheepshead Bay, NY. Ruth touched many lives with her compassion, strength, and generous nature.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, Harry J. McDowell, Jr, her parents, James V. Colpitts, Sr, and Frances McElroy, brother, James V. Colpitts, Jr, sisters, Frances Crossan and Jean Colpitts.

Ruth was a Registered Nurse, graduating in 1943 from Presbyterian School of Nursing, Philadelphia, PA. Her nursing career spanned five decades and included the areas of practice in pediatrics, private duty, camp nurse, and mental health. In 2010, Ruth received the Service Award from The Florida Society of Registered Nurses Retired, Treasure Coast Chapter, for her decades of volunteer service to many organizations. She retired from active employment in 1987 with Variety Children's Hospital, part of Miami Children's Health System (Nicklaus Children's Hospital), after 25 years.

Ruth is survived by her children, Janegale Boyd (Hines), Monticello, FL, Frances Youmans (Richard), Cairo, GA, Joseph McDowell (Linda), Plant City, FL, and Susan Brun (Mike), Los Almitos, CA. She leaves 11 grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00pm, Thursday, January 7, 2016, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, Monticello, FL, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Those wishing to honor Ruth's memory can make contributions to:
