Doris Mary Leonard
Worcester - Doris Mary (Collins) Leonard, 88, of Worcester, died peacefully at her home on Monday morning, May 7, 2012 under the loving care of her family. She was born in Fall River, grew up in Worcester, and then moved to West Boylston to raise her family.
She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, John H. Leonard, her parents, John and Irene Collins, and her brother, Donald Collins. She leaves her three children, Gail Turner, Robert Leonard and Linda Isgro and her husband Peter Isgro; five grandchildren, Michelle Hart, Sherry Rotondo, Sheena Toscano, Anthony and Nadiya Isgro; five great-grandchildren, Camden and Brandon Hart, Brianna and Michael Rotondo, III and Mason Toscano. She also leaves her loving companion of 21 years, Ralph Herman.
Doris graduated from Commerce High School in 1942. She served as a Second Class Petty Officer in the Navy during World War II, where she met her husband who served as a First Class Deep Sea Diver and Instructor.
She was employed as a bookkeeper for 64 years, retiring from Lane, Greene, Murtha & Edwards at age 83. She served on the Hillside Condominium Board of Trustees, as well as a pollster for Worcester County. She was a recipient of the Special Congressional Recognition Award for outstanding and invaluable service to the community. While an employee of the Rockwell Sprinkler Company, she won The Army-Navy Production Award for Excellence in War Production.
Doris was a member of the American Legion Post 279. She served as president of the Women's Guild of St. Christopher's Parish in Worcester.
Doris was an accomplished seamstress, musician, painter, amazing hostess and cook. She enjoyed the great outdoors, camping, skiing, gardening, fishing and cruising on the GaiLinBob, their yacht. She loved to travel and has vacationed in 69 countries. Doris brought joy to so many children's faces with her gift of clowning. She won awards for her beautiful face painting and make-up artistry.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral Mass to celebrate her life on Friday, May 11th at noontime in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester with burial to follow at St. John's Cemetery. Her wishes were that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Doris Leonard Avon Walk at Sovereign Bank to be donated for breast cancer research in her memory.
