Edith Knowlton Obituary

Edith Lind Kowlton, 82
WALLINGFORD, CT - Edith Lind Knowlton, 82, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, died peacefully Monday, September 9, 2013. She was the loving wife of Robert C. Knowlton.
Edie was born in New York City, February 6, 1931, a daughter of the late John F. Lind and Madeleine C. (Smith) Lind. She grew up in Auburn, Massachusetts and had been a resident of Delaware and Kinston, North Carolina for many years until moving to Connecticut. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1949 and Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in 1952; she received her certification in Occupational Health Care in 1981 and was employed as a registered nurse for many years at E.I. DuPont.
Edie gave a great deal of time to causes she believed in, serving as a medical missionary in the South Pacific in 1969, working on American Red Cross blood drives and disaster relief teams, volunteering for United Way, driving for Meals on Wheels, and teaching as a qualified educator for the HIV-AIDS program. In 1993 she received the North Carolina Governor's Award for outstanding volunteer service.
Her love of nursing and helping others was second only to her love of family. In addition to Bob, her husband of 60 years, she is survived by her daughter Alison Karam and her husband Chris of Killingworth, CT and grandson Paul Robert Karam. She also leaves her sister, Diane C. Ela Lauzon (Auburn, MA), an aunt, Judy Williams (Hampton, VA), eight nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by her brother, Dr. John A. Lind.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Saturday, September 21, 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 65 North Main Street, Wallingford, CT. Interment will be private. There will be no funeral home calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be sent to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 65 North Main St., Wallingford, CT 06492, or to the Masonic Charity Foundation, P. O. Box 70, Wallingford, CT 06492. To share a memory or leave a condolence for the family, please visit

Edie was such a special friend to me during my time at the Red Cross. She always called me Jeannie which I loved. During the last few weeks I have been looking for her on Facebook, just had her on my mind. I will miss her greatly.
