Edward Hyder Obituary

Edward G. Hyder 67

Mediterranean Market Place

Worcester - Edward George Hyder, 67, of Worcester, founder and proprietor of Ed Hyder's Mediterranean Marketplace, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 6, 2018.

Ed was deeply committed to his family, friends, customers, and community. He was unfailingly kind and generous, with a warmth he extended to everyone he met. Ed enjoyed telling stories, one of many ways that he remembered people, shared his own life with others, and offered advice. Ed loved the city and people of Worcester and was thrilled to be part of this vibrant community as a business owner. In 1975, Ed opened Ed Hyder's Mediterranean Marketplace in a 400-square-foot space with tightly-packed shelves. In 1994, Ed bought a historic former firehouse where he evolved his business into a specialty market that became a food and wine destination in the region. Ed greeted customers, often in their native language, with a smile and a story, always eager to help patrons navigate the store and find just what they were looking for – or didn't know they needed. Ed was as caring with his employees as he was with his customers, offering support and a listening ear, and time with him would prove an invaluable experience for all.

Born and raised on Grafton Hill, the son of George F. and Minnie E. (Kalil) Hyder, Ed graduated from North High School in 1968. He attended Quinsigamond Community College then earned his bachelor's degree in History from Worcester State University. Ed was a third-generation grocer. He began working at Hyder's Market on Hamilton Street, alongside his father and uncles, at age 10.

Ed was an active member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral throughout his life. He delighted in creating community among fellow parishioners and friends. He helped found the Knights of St. George Heritage Archives, served on the Cathedral board, and planned countless church festivals and events.

A boy scout from a young age, Ed achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in his late teens. Many of his fondest memories were made at Treasure Valley with Troop 72. Ed was a Mason and member of the Boylston Lodge. An avid music fan and drummer, Ed played both jazz and Middle Eastern music professionally. He performed with a number of bands, entertaining people at countless weddings and other events.

Ed leaves his loving wife of 40 years, Edna M. (Boshar) Hyder. Ed treasured his children, Alexis M. Hyder, of Boston, Miriam E. Hyder and her husband Patrick Logan, and Gregory E. Hyder all of Worcester, and his sister, Linda A. Hyder, of Mendocino, CA. Ed leaves countless cousins, nieces, and nephews, and one surviving uncle.

Family was everything to Ed. Ed and Edna had a strong partnership. They lit up when they danced together at haflis, and last spring traveled to France, exploring wine regions, learning from fourteenth-generation winemakers, and enjoying the gorgeous countryside. He was incredibly proud of his children and shared stories about them with anyone who would listen. He loved his sister and hung her gorgeous photographs in his home. Ed maintained strong bonds with his cousins despite geographic distance.

Ed treasured his friendships, holding them close to his heart. He nurtured many lifelong relationships, and continued making friends of all ages. Ed was kind, engaging, and funny. He loved meeting people and sharing a joke and a story.

Ed enjoyed life's simple pleasures. On Sunday mornings in the summer, Ed and Edna loved walking along Narragansett Town Beach in Rhode Island, collecting shells and listening to the ocean. He was an expert crossword puzzler and a voracious reader. Ed loved learning about and drinking wine, always ready with a recommendation and extra glasses for friends. He will be missed dearly.

Calling hours will be held from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., Sunday, February 11, and again from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m., Monday, February 12, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna Street, Worcester, MA with burial at Hope Cemetery. The Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel is honored to assist the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral Endowment Fund 30 Anna Street, Worcester, MA 01602), St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105), or to honor his nephew living with a spinal cord injury, the Christopher I. Boshar Trust (10 Essex Place, Chelmsford, MA 01824).

I just heard of Ed's passing from Miriam last Friday, when I stopped by the store with yet another student of mine who "had to experience Ed Hyder's Mediterranean Market." Although I live half an hour west of Worcester, no visit to that fine city would be complete without a stop at Ed's wonderful store. I know that Miriam and others in the family will continue the tradition of excellence that Ed established, and her Dad will smile upon them with pride.

I wasn't as lucky as some of the people here who knew Ed well, but I knew him well enough to know that he was the kind, friendly, and thoughtful person that everyone has described. I just heard today that he passed and I'm still in shock. I looked forward to a quick hello and chat with him whenever I went to the market and I'm sad that I won't get that extra benefit when I shop there. To all his family and friends, my deepest condolences. We have lost a great and gentle human being.

Ed was truly one of the kindest, sincere people that God put on earth. I am so sad to hear of his passing. May we all learn from the way Ed lived his life and may we aspire to live our lives the way he lived his. He brought genuine love to everyone he met. He will never, ever be forgotten.

Rest in peace my friend!

I knew Ed not quite 10 yrs and he became a good friend. We talked about life experiences, what was in Berbere spice and lots in between. I had urged him to travel and was so pleased that he and Edna made it to France last summer. I had hoped to meet there but we were 2 weeks off. Ed talked about organizing a trip to Lebanon and I was ready to sign on. He joked that we'd visit his father's ancestral lands and have to promise his cousins that he was only visiting, not laying claim to them.
He was ethical and kind, someone with whom one could do business on a handshake. Having hundreds of people on hand to mourn his passing is the ultimate tribute to the man.
We enjoyed many a glass together. With great sadness, I can no longer drink to his health. But I will always drink to his memory.

February 14, 2018

To the Hyder family,
You have my deepest sympathies. I have known Eddie since we were children in Sunday school. He was just a really good guy taken way too soon. Just from the tributes here and on facebook and the long line at the wake tells you everything you need to know about him.

Dear Hyder Family & Friends,

Sincere condolences on the passing of a great guy. I knew Ed for almost 50 years and loved stopping into the shop to not only pick up groceries and meats but to talk wine. I especially enjoyed talking about his recent visit to the St. Emilion region of France. His passing leaves a great void in this world. May his memory be eternal.

When I first arrived in Worcester in 1995, Hyder's Market gave me a sense of home. Shopping there quickly became visiting, and always lifted my spirits. Even on the busiest days, Ed would look up from the back room, smile, nod and make me feel completely welcomed. When I wanted to impress my out-of-town guests with the best of Worcester, or share the pleasures of this city with my mom, I always brought them to Hyder's. Most of my food memories for the past 23 years somehow involve Hyder's, where everything is excellent, and the avgolemeno is as good as my dad's was. Ed's shop and products were consistently impeccable.

But Ed's distinction as a shopowner far exceeded his impressive culinary skills; he exuded respect, generosity, and joy. What I admire the most is how he really figured out how to shine through in everything he did. The best part is that this good spirit was contagious: it clearly lives on through his family, the many staff he mentored over the years, and the community of friends and customers. Many kitchens, including mine, are better because of him. But, more importantly, so is this community. Thank you, Ed.

I lived in Worcester for 29 years, having arrived a few months after the Blizzard of '78 as a 27-year old out-of-state transplant. I met Eddy in 1980 by referral of a Nightlife cooking instructor. It is one of those and-I-never-looked-back moments. What a guy!
Eddy was one of those people whom you shared with everyone you knew because you wanted to make their lives richer for having known him. Each of us is shaped by those who rear us and interact with us. May his family and close friends find comfort as each of us passes on our bit of Eddy to those who were not as fortunate to have known him personally.

February 12, 2018

My Deepest sympathies goes out to the Hyder family. .I will always remember Ed for being kind and generous ,a mentor in so many ways, always smiling .The Hyder family was blessed to have him as a husband, Father, uncle, brother, cousin and son. He was very unique in his own special way. I will always have good memories of Ed selling my Easter candles every year, That meant so much to me..
I am saddened that I was not able to see him before he passed suddenly...
Again, My thoughts and prayers go out to the Hyder family .

Dear family.....The Alumni Association of North High School join so many in sending our deepest sympathy & prayers to you all in the loss of Ed. He was someone who never forgot his high school and was always ready to help us out when we came asking. Just hard to accept that he won't be here to continue with his stories and lending a hand when needed. Certainly was an incredible guy and like all of us, we hope your memories are a constant source of comfort. Rest in Peace dear friend!

I will miss Ed for his positive and caring nature, and sincere kindness he shared with all. Ed brought out the best in everybody that he met and was there during times of celebration, times of sorrow, or in times of special needs. It is that special gift he had that made one look forward to seeing him simply to say hello or wish each other well besides enjoying the traditional and diverse ethnic foods he carefully marketed for his customers. Over the last forty plus years my parents (John and Eugenia Andrianopoulos) loved going to Ed's market every week. My parents have passed, however with the fond memories our family enjoyed with Ed over the years continue with me, my children, sisters, brother and our their family's and our respective friends. It warms my heart to see Ed's legacy continue with his children and family running his iconic market into the future creating new memories for all! As I think of Ed, he truly was a role model to all in doing the right thing and representing what matters the most in ones life!

Ed will be dearly missed-his memory and friendship provides inspiration to make all of us a better person for knowing him.

One of the sad moments at my 50th reunion last year(DMHS)was recognition of the many classmates no longer with us. Ed will be truly be missed by his many friends from North High at their 50th. When I had a paper route on Hamilton St, Ed was working at his family market. Ed learned a lot from his parents, who were wonderful people. We both played in musical groups and would always catch up when our paths crossed. Ed had many friends and they had good reason to appreciate him. He had a good sense of humor, never forgot his roots ,loved his family and was very proud of his children. I offer my deepest sympathy for your loss. He will be missed by many.

My dearest friend, long time employer, confidant and many times my inspiration who pulled me through the tuffest times in my life. You truly knew me and made me smile. At 15 you gave me a chance to be a part of your family business and treated me like one of your own. I watched your kids grow, remember every store as you grew bigger and bigger . I always managed to work in all of them. My culinary dreams have always, and will always be rooted by your belief in me, when I did not see my potential. For that I thank you, and forever I will always hold you dearest to my heart. I am most sad I never got the chance to say goodbye and tell you that you've be the most instrumental person in my life . I'm saddened by the loss of this wonderful man. I first me Eddie when I was just a junior at North High. Jim Mitchell and I would tag along with him to "Lenny's on the Pike" on the north shore to see Buddy Rich. A few years later, we would see each other at Worcester State. Years later, whenever I stopped by the store to say "hi", Eddie would bring out a snack and a bottle of wine or Bourbon! Then, there were those Thursday night card games! We last spoke a few months ago when he called me to ask if I'd like to join him to see a jazz show in RI. Unfortunately, I could go but now wish I did. Rest in peace my friend...

Ed's passing has shocked many people. I couldn't believe the news. It shook me to the bone. I have known Ed and been friends for really all our lives. Ed's mom and mine were very close friends and Ed and I attended school from Kindergarten through North High School.

My recent years have been our class reunions and visits in "the back room" of the Marketplace where Ed would be cutting up lamb, beef, or chicken as food was prepared.

My heart goes out to Edna and his family which I know goes beyond his kids. Ed was part of Worcester. He will be missed beyond what words may convey.

Eddie Hyder was one of the Greats; always a class act with a story to tell. We attended Sunday School and were altar boys and Scouts at the old St. George church on Wall Street. It was always a pleasure to stop in the store to hang with Eddie for awhile. Though we lived far away our child hood bonds were forever. He always had time for conversation and he'd keep me informed whose kid was now on payroll; Ya couldn't help but love this guy. I'm stunned that he's gone, that I'll never see him again. So thankful that I was able to visit with him last Fall; that is the memory I will keep with me. My condolences to all the family..............Eddie was truly one of the Greats. RIP old friend.

Our sincere condolences to Edna, Alexis, Miriam and Greg in the loss of their husband and dad. We will miss seeing Ed busy at work in the back room preparing orders but always willing to stop and say hi. A true gentleman and proprietor of a Worcester Landmark. We will all miss him. Eddie and my husband Jim grew up together. They were close friends and fellow musicians in the Worcester scene. Grafton Hill natives, and for a while our eldest daughters , Alexis and Gisele went to school together. Eddie and Jim stayed connected until Jim's sudden death in February 4 years ago. My youngest daughter Josette, texted me this morning with the sad news of Eddie's passing, writing that February is the worst! The Allard girls, all five of us, send our love and sympathy to the Hyder family.
