Edward Kossack Obituary

Edward Kossack, 86, owner of Hart Farm Nursery in Dennisport died February 24, 2007 at Cape Cod Hospital. Born September 13, 1920 in Newark, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Frank and Eugenia (Borowski) Kossack of Irvington, NJ. He is predeceased by his sisters Helen Osiecki of Eastham and Mary Anne Sangston of Clark, NJ.

Ed was a varsity letterman and captain of the football team at Irvington High School. His college education was interrupted by World War II. He served as a First Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in the Pacific theater where he was awarded the Okinawa Battle Star. Following his military service, he graduated from Rutgers University in 1950 with a BS in Agriculture.

In 1949 he married Helen Packet of Newark, NJ. For 22 years, he worked as a salesman for Geo. Hormel Co. The family lived in Cedar Grove, NJ where he was active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as both troop committee chairman and assistant scoutmaster for many years. In 1963 the family moved to Westboro, where he was president of the Civitan Club and remained active in scouting.

He had always had an avid interest in plants and gardening, and in 1972 he left Hormel and moved to the Cape in pursuit of that dream. For the past 34 years he has been the owner of Hart Farm Nursery in Dennisport and continued to play an active role in running the business until the time of his death. He was passionate about his work with plants and flowers and loved dealing with the public. In addition to the fresh corn and the plants, Ed's ebullient and jovial personality was one of the most enduring memories of a visit to Hart Farm. Since the early 70's the nursery has grown and become a landmark for Cape visitors and residents. He was a generous benefactor of many local charities and was active in numerous Cape civic organizations including the Dennis-Harwich Rotary and the Dennis Chamber of Commerce.

He was an avid fisherman and loved the natural surroundings of the Cape, which provided for both his livelihood and his major avocational interests. He traveled extensively and collected waterfowl carvings from all over the world. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his many grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Helen (Packet), his sister and brother in law Eleanor and John Finan of Orleans, three children Robert of Shrewsbury, Donald of Dennis and Carol of Totawa, NJ; two daughters-in-law Gretchen and Nancy, 11 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Visiting hours will be Friday March 2 from 5 to 9 PM at Doane Beal and Ames Funeral Home 729 Route 134 in South Dennis. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday March 3 at 10 AM at Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich followed by internment at Oak Ridge Cemetery in South Dennis.

Donations in memory of Ed may be made to the NJDC Meese Welfare Fund c/o Jeanine Hundt North Jersey Developmental Center PO Box 169 Totawa, NJ 07511.

Ed was the best. I never left the farm without feeling a lift to my life. what a combination. Flowers and Ed.I can't imagine all the thousands of people he touched with his singing and charm and of course his knowledge of the outside world of agriculture.
He made me a better person.

Ed was more than a pleasure to do both personal (my Corn guru) or professional business with - 18 yrs. and NO other customer EVER came to the phone when I called and instead of a standard "hello", ALWAYS greeted me with a hearty verse of "Once in love with Amy". He was just a joy (typical of many of us Jersey folks) and I'll miss seeing and calling him at Harts. My deepest sympathy.

Our lives are a reflection of the people we've crossed paths with. When we lose someone we’ve shared our lives with, no matter how brief it may have been, we gather our memories and connect once again. My memories of Uncle Ed have admittedly succumbed to a long absence but have since been resurrected. The warmth in my heart cannot be described but I know its source of heat is the love Uncle Ed showed me each time we visited. We will meet again.

Ed Kossack was a great man and I will miss him very much. He was always so good to me and my family, especially after little Andrew came along, and I have truly enjoyed working for him. I will miss hearing him sing "Mona Lisa" as I walk through the farm each day. With deepest sympathy and love.

Ed's dialogue and sense of humor gave the visits to the farm a special touch. As a family we will miss his presence and appreciate the knowledge he shared with Nick through his high school years. I am sure you have plenty of memories that bring a smile to your face. May they confort you now and for days to come.

Don,
My children and I are deeply saddened by the loss of your dad. They remember how kind and generous he was to them when we lived in Dennisport back in the '70's. He would always give them fruit and even a discounted tree on one Christmas. I always bought plants for my garden from Hart's Farm because Mr.Ed made shopping fun and the plants were of great quality. We will always be grateful to him. Your family is in our prayers.

Whenever we visited the Cape and Hart Farm, he always had a smile on his face when he spotted us. After my grandparents passed away, he treated my brother and I as if we were his own grandkids. The Cape wasn't the same after they had passed away, but he made it better and brighter with his good heart. Uncle Ed, I'll miss you and I hope you are now in peace.

To the Family of Ed Kossack-
Ed was a fixture in our community, and to me, a bit larger than life.
Since 1985, I have looked forward to seeing him, exchanging a greeting, and some bit of plant lore. His annual display of pansies, was for me, the official announcement that spring had arrived. His knowledge, voice, and his song, will be greatly missed by so many of us... And, a visit to the Farm will be a happy reminder that he left the world a friendlier place. My condolences to you all.
Sincerely,

Marie Soucy

My wife and I are going to miss seeing Ed when we go to Hart Farm this year. It was always a great pleasure to deal with (or simply talk to) him and we especially enjoyed the atmosphere he created with his almost constant smile and his sudden bursts of song. Be comforted with the knowledge that he leaves us all with many fond memories. He was a good man!
