Genevieve Agbay Obituary

Genevieve H. Agbay

Worcester - Genevieve H. (Duncan) Agbay, 86, longtime Worcester resident passed away on Friday, February 12, 2016 with her loved ones gathered by her bedside.

Genevieve would like to let you know that her work here is done. She received a call from Jesus, a sort of offer you can't refuse, for an appointment from which she will not be returning. The assignment comes with finally getting to meet Jesus and finally getting to reunite with her loving husband, Tony and a reunion with family and friends that she has not seen in a long time. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place where she will be socializing, dancing, cooking and reading to her hearts content. Music, laughter and love are guaranteed, the food is delicious and you never gain an ounce. She has left detailed instructions for her children and family to celebrate her mission here, which is now been completed.

Genevieve was born in Spencer, a daughter of the late Elmer and Genevieve (Butler) Duncan; she was one of eleven children, and graduated from Leicester High School. In 1948, Genevieve married Tony Agbay and for the next forty years they raised their family with love, devotion and dedication until Tony passed away in 1988. Genevieve continued to be the center of her family. Genevieve was a homemaker her whole life.

She is survived by her devoted family; her children, Richard Agbay of Worcester, Anthony Agbay and his wife Maureen of Spencer, Cheryl D'Ambra and her husband Joseph of Worcester, Cindy Saucier and her husband Daniel of Holden, David Agbay and his wife Jocelyn of Worcester, Sandra O'Shea and her husband Gerald of Sutton, Michael Agbay and his wife Lori of Worcester, and Robert Agbay and his wife Sheila of Worcester; eighteen grandchildren, Ashley, Alexis, James, Anthony Jr., Brian, Stephen, David Jr., Jocelyn, Alyssa, Jeness, Robert Jr., and Kayla Agbay ,Tara and Joe Jr. D'Ambra, Daniel Jr. and Kimberly Saucier, Morgan and Shane O'Shea; eight great grandchildren, DJ and Bella Mara, Anthony III, Ace, Maverick, Brianna, Mikayla, and Faith Agbay. She is also survived by her sister, Carol Wall of Stuart Florida, and her brother Albert Duncan of Worcester; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 3 brothers and 5 sisters.

She was a beautiful person who enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved gourmet cooking, baking and cake decorating. She was very creative and was a talented artist who loved to draw. She loved decorating, knitting and needlepoint. Her husband, children and grandchildren always came first in her life and they will remember her smile, her warmth, her love of life, family and friends. She made a difference in the lives of many. Her passing leaves a hole in our hearts but her loving and caring soul will not be forgotten. We want to let her know that she did a great job and wish her a safe journey.

The family would like to express its sincere gratitude for the care and compassion she received from many of the staff at the Holden Nursing and Rehab Center where she was a resident the last few years. We would also like to thank UMass ICU staff for their care and compassion through this difficult time.

We invite you to join us and celebrate together during Calling Hours on Tuesday, February 16, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Her Funeral will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday morning, February 17, departing at 9:40 a.m. in procession for a 10 a.m. Mass at Saint John's Church, 44 Temple Street, Worcester. Interment beside her beloved husband will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Saint Jude Children's Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Way, Memphis, TN 38105 or by going to www.stjude.org.

Dear Nana,
I miss you already. It is going to be a rocky road for the rest of my life knowing that you are not here. We shared so many memories in the eleven years I knew you for, and I wish we could have known each other more. We shared all of the ups and downs together right up until you were rushed to uMass Hospital on February 8th. I didn't get to see you when you were in the hospital, but I wanted to remember you as a happy, joyful woman.
The first story I was told about meeting you was when I was in the hospital, and your bright blue eyes were looking down at me.
The first sad time that you were not in care of your family was when I was in Kindergarten. I was dreading it when it happened. The paramedics rushed in the house when you had your first of many bad falls.
When they were taking you out of Cheryl's house, I was scaredly saying to my mother, Where is Nana? Where are they taking her? She is supposed to be with us.
I came to the Holden Nursing Home for the first time, and I remember where your room was. Oak North, Room 1. When all of the family walked in, I saw your beautiful smile and it made me smile, and almost cry. You did this many other times, which were sad but happy because what did you do? You looked at me and smiled. And once again, it made me smile. I have heard so many good stories about you and your good cooking, and your art. I think I am getting those qualities from you. Every time we would take you to Val's , we would both get the same thing to eat. Baked Scallops. I remember all of the times when Grammy and I went up to the Nursing Home, and we sat in your room with you. You went through so many room-mates while you were there, and I'm very thankful that you could have stayed here this long.
It is just so hard to really understand that you are no longer here. I just want you to go hang in there and I will be there to kiss you goodnight again!!
Love,
DJ

Nana, I miss you already! I don't know what to do without you. You were the strongest woman I have ever met, you fought through all of the very tough times. But we all lost the battle this time. We all miss you, but you will be in a better place in heaven, than being in the hospital. I want to let you know that I am praying for you every night in front of my holy cross. You will be in my heart forever and always!!!!!!!!!!

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I remember your mother from when I first met you guys in the 70's. She and your father were an impressive couple. I apologize for missing the calling hours and the funeral. I have been working so much that I didn't find out about the schedule until after they were over. I'll give you a call. Doug Urquhart. Let us run to her, and, as her little children, cast ourselves into her arms with perfect confidence!
Cheryl, Cindy, Rick and all your siblings, Gen's entire family - Your Mom was one of the most caring, funny and brave woman I have ever met and had the privilege of helping to care for. Her passing leaves a huge emptiness on our Unit and she will never be forgotten. Some of you know my struggles w/ grief over losing my Mom - so know this: she will be w/ you, she will watch over you (you'll feel it!) and she will protect you. What a legacy she leaves in all of you! You are all in my prayers at this most difficult time. I feel honored to have known her.
God Bless! And take care of each other. Joanie
