Hazel McCarthy Obituary

Hazel G. McCarthy, 91

AUBURN - Hazel G. (Munsen) McCarthy, 91, long time Auburn resident, passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday, April 26, 2021 at Life Care Center of Auburn.

She was the devoted wife of the late John L. McCarthy, with whom she shared 54 years of marriage before his passing in 2007. Haze was the beloved mother of her five sons: John McCarthy and his wife Jean, of Auburn; Robert McCarthy and his wife Sharron, of Bedford, NH; Kevin McCarthy and his wife Nancy, of Litchfield, NH; Timothy and his wife Beth, of Central Square, NY; and Nick and his wife Maryann, of Matthews NC. She was the doting grandmother of Daniel, Diancy, Thomas, Ali, Maggie, Laurel, Ryan, Erin, Jack, Kendall, Lana, Melody, Michael, Mia, and her great grandchildren – Josh and Kylinn. Hazel was predeceased by her parents, Sampson Munsen (Norway) and Mary E. (Thibodeau) (Nova Scotia).

Born and raised in Melrose, she and John married in Wakefield in 1953 and moved to Auburn, MA in 1963. There she relished her role as a wife and Mother, keeping an immaculate house, preparing wholesome meals, all the while supporting John's bourgeoning business. Her holiday dinners were legendary, freshly made everything, flawlessly presented for 20 or 40 people without a hitch and everyone was always welcome to eat or to join her for a cup of tea. Her home was always beautifully decorated for the holidays and in the summer her red geraniums always graced the deck.

In addition to her immediate family, she prized time (which there was never enough of) with her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and friends. To all of those, she was a valued advisor and cherished friend.

Hazel took great pride in serving her family in every possible manner, always with a smile.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts Alzheimer's Association (www.alz.org/manh).

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the McCarthy family between 9:30 and 10:30 AM on Monday, May 3, 2021 at the BRITTON - WALLACE FUNERAL HOME, 91 Central Street, Auburn. Her funeral Mass will then be celebrated at 11 AM at North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive, Auburn. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
