Joanne Sanderson Obituary
Clinton - Joanne Catherine (Cooney) Sanderson, 59, passed away peacefully at her home in Amesbury of natural causes, on April 16, 2021.
"Jo," as she was always called, was born to Will and Vi (Garofoli) Cooney in Clinton, MA on May 16, 1961. A graduate of Clinton High School, Class of 1979, Jo attended Worcester State College until she felt called upon to follow in her dad's footsteps and enlist in the United States Navy. During her time in the Navy, she was trained as a cryptology specialist. She was honorably discharged in 1985, then began a lifetime career of serving her country in a civilian capacity, most recently as a Defense Contractor at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA.
Jo loved the beach, the smell of the ocean, the feel of the sun on her face while a salty, watery breeze messed her hair, and, most importantly, a book in her hands-she was an avid reader all her life. Her favorite pastime was to travel. In the Navy, she was stationed in Alaska and Guam, and later she loved her various journeys. She felt especially lucky for her excellent adventures in England, Ireland, Scotland and Switzerland. But what brought her the most joy and fulfillment were her roles as mother and grandmother.
She leaves her beloved children, grandchildren, and children-in law: Nicole (Sanderson) Nagel of Virginia, her husband Mark and their son Dominic, and Jonathan Sanderson of Wells, Maine, his wife Melissa and their son Connor. She also leaves the loving and loved members of her large family, the Cooneys, including her dad, Will, of Clinton, her sisters Ellen of Maine, Elyze of California, Anne of Washington, Carol of Leominster and Mari of Nahant, her brother Jim of Lunenburg, her sisters-in-law Ellen and Tina, brothers-in-law Jay, Bob, and Neil, her nieces Caitlin and Allison, nephews Michael, Zack, Joe, Matt, Sean, and Ryan, her great-niece Parker, great-nephew Noah, and many cousins and close friends.
Calling hours will be held from 4 until 7PM on Thursday, April 22, 2021 in the Philbin-Comeau Funeral Home, 176 Water St., Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM on Friday, April 23, 2021 in St. John the Evangelist Church, 80 Union St., Clinton. Burial will later be held privately. Heaven has gained another angel and I will miss you my friend. It has been many years since our last meeting in Virginia. But I will always cherish those days when we were stationed in Guam and you were always a blast to be around and I will never forget that laugh.

When Fred sent out the notification that Dominic, Joanne´s grandson, was born I sent a brief note to her (in 2019). I then ran into her in the hall shortly thereafter and she was BEAMING. She was sincerely the most proud, sweet grandmother that could be imagined. She was so excited and immediately pulled out her phone. Several times when I ran into her in passing in the halls, I asked her how he was or if she had time to see him and she would pull up his latest, adorable pictures. Her smile and sense of humor will be missed!

My heart goes out to you today. Joanne and I were sent by the Air Force to a remote site in Alaska in 2016 to work for a week. On the final day the Lieutenants there took us mountain climbing in Denali National Park. Needless to say I knew every detail of Joanne's family by the end of the week! Two years later we were hiring a person to join my Team in a different Program. When I saw Joanne's name among the candidates on the list, I knew there would be no need for interviews - Joanne got the job! Joanne, I will miss you so much. Again, blessings on Joanne's family - "a time to mourn, and a time to dance" We mourn, but will always remember when we "danced."
