Martin Mulry Obituary

It is with great sadness and a profound sense of loss that the family of Martin Fahy Mulry announces his passing. He died Saturday morning, December 2nd, in Stamford, Connecticut following a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved son of Lawrence and Mary Jane Kenny Mulry, beloved brother of John, Maryellen, Ann, Lawrence, Catherine, Frances and Dorothy Mulry, all deceased, and Ruth Flagler; the beloved uncle of Mary Jane Newman, Geoffrey Newman, Matthew and Anthony Newman and Dorothy Tabbah. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews, all of whom acknowledged him as the family patriarch.

Born November 14, 1917 in Worcester, Massachusetts, Martin attended North High School and graduated from Holy Cross College in Worcester. Immediately after his graduation, Martin enlisted in the Army Air Corps (USAF), attended the School of Statistics at Harvard University and served with distinction in the intelligence arena in Britain during World War II, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He attended Columbia University Teacher's College and received a Master of Arts degree from Boston College. He was a teacher of Latin in the Worcester school system and a member of the Air Force Reserve. He distinguished himself with many awards both as a teacher and in his military service. His students and peers remained loyal throughout the course of his long life.

Martin was an excellent amateur pianist and an avid fan of classical music. He supported his alma maters and served on many boards and charitable organizations. His love for his family was legendary and he raised his nieces, Mary Jane Newman and Dorothy Flagler Tabbah and was instrumental in the upbringing of Geoffrey, Matthew and Anthony Newman. He was a powerful influence for good on all who knew him and on his many students.

After retirement, he lived in Sandwich, Massachusetts with his sister Dorothy, until her passing in February 2005.

His wake will be held at The Gallagher Funeral Home in Greenwich, Connecticut on Wednesday, December 6th. Calling hours will be from 4 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Church on the Green in Bedford, New York on Thursday, December 7th at 11am. His burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to The College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, in his honor.

We will miss Uncle Martin at all of our family birthdays and holiday celebrations on Cape Cod.Thank you to his niece, Mary Jane Mooney, and her husband Jack for the love and care they gave to both Martin and Dot on a regular basis. Martin loved the Cape, and your help made life for Martin and Dot so much easier and brighter!
