Nicholas D. Mercadante 88

Fitchburg - Nicholas D. Mercadante, 88, of Fitchburg, died Saturday, January 23, 2016, at Health Alliance - Leominster Hospital.

Mr. Mercadante was born in Worcester, October 4, 1927, the son of Domenic and Jeanette (DiConza) Mercadante, and grew up in Worcester. He was a 1946 graduate of Worcester North High School, and continued his education at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester where he graduated in 1950 with a degree in accounting. In 1982, he received a master's degree in taxation from Bentley University.

Mr. Mercadante's accounting career spanned over six decades beginning at George A. Smith & Company, a CPA firm located in Worcester Massachusetts specializing in audits of banks and credit unions. In 1959 after passing the CPA exam, he opened his own practice located in Fitchburg. During 1983, following the entrance of his son Anthony to the firm, he relocated the accounting business to its current location on 29 Mechanic Street in Fitchburg. The business incorporated in 1987 renaming the firm to Mercadante & Mercadante, P.C and continues to operate under family ownership.

Mr. Mercadante is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances M. (Posco) Mercadante and four children and their spouses, Nicholas M. Mercadante, MD and Alexandra Calcagno of Lunenburg; Dominic P. Mercadante and Joseph N. Mooney of Belfast, Maine; Ann Marie Pastor and Roy W. Pastor of Harvard; Anthony J. Mercadante and Deborah A. Mercadante of Fitchburg. He is survived by seven grandchildren, Talia Mercadante, Antonia Pastor, Olivia Mercadante, Sophia Mercadante, Alessandra Pastor, Nicholas A. Mercadante, and Cecilia F. Mercadante. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Viola Mercadante of Plainville, CT and many beloved cousins, nephews and nieces.

He was predeceased by his brother, Vincent Mercadante of Plainville, CT.

A longtime parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Mr. Mercadante served on the Finance Committee and Parish Council. He served many years on the Board of Directors at then Fitchburg Savings Bank, now known as Rollstone Bank and Trust, first as a corporator, then trustee, and finally as Chairman of the Board of Directors for fifteen years.

He was a longtime member of the Fitchburg Rotary Club where he served many years as the treasurer and was a Paul Harris Fellow Award recipient. Mr. Mercadante was proud of his Italian-American heritage. In 2013 he and his wife, Frances, were awarded the first Fitchburg State University Amelia V. Gallucci Circo Scholarship for their service and support for the Center for Italian Culture.

Understanding the value of a quality education, Mr. Mercadante was a generous supporter of his alma mater, the College of the Holy Cross and was a proud member of the President's Council. He was also a generous contributor to St. Louis University and the University of Pennsylvania, where all his children received their undergraduate degrees and some their post-graduate degrees.

Our hearts are aching in FL for the loss of our cousin, "Coley" I know how close he and my father were growing up and that the miles between MA and FL didn't allow them to spend as much time together as the would have like, but the hearts were always close.

Sending love from your Florida family!

Dear Mercadante Family,

Please accept our condolences at the passing of your father/grandfather, Nicholas Mercadante. He was a gentleman and leader in our community and will always be remembered as a voice of reason during parish council meetings, as well as a faithful and devoted Catholic man. An inspiration, for sure!

We will also remember witnessing the tenderness and respect you all gave him as you "wheeled" him into and out of St. Anthony Church these past months. He and your Mom certainly raised a beautiful family!

May you all be surrounded by God's amazing grace during this most difficult time.

With love and prayers,

Sorry to read about Nick's passing. He's been a good neighbor to my mom Tish at the Manor. In my younger years I worked for John Kelley and we all worked on bank audits together. He was such a nice guy and was very helpful to me in the accounting business. We all worked so hard during tax seasons. No computers back then. Your all in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time.
