Paul W. Stanford

Sutton - Paul W. Stanford, "Captain Hook", 76, died at home Thursday, October 1, following an illness. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary (Calnan) Stanford; a son, William W. Stanford, of Sutton; two grandchildren, Steven M. Stanford, of Northbridge, and Katrina Stanford-Thompson, of Oxford; a great granddaughter, Abigail Ann Stanford; and three sisters. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

Mr. Stanford was born in Worcester, June 25, 1939, a son of Walter and Thelma (Schofield) Stanford, and had lived in Sutton since 1944. He attended Worcester Boys' Trade High School, and he was a U.S. Army Veteran.

He was a welder, and the owner of Captain Hook's Wrought Iron Shop in Sutton. From the age of eleven until he went into the service, he worked at Bill Stockwell's Dairy in Sutton.

Mr. Stanford belonged to the Dudley-Gendron American Legion Post in Sutton, the Sutton Lions Club, and the Worcester City Cribbage League. He loved his garden, and was an award winning archer.

A Memorial honoring "Captain Hook" will be held at the Dudley-Gendron Post at a time and date to be announced.

I knew Paul since I was very little. He and my Dad were good friends, and we went to visit often. I remember him showing me his yellow '57 Chevy, and how proud he was of it. He was a strong and kind man that me and my family loved very much.
