Robert Mullin Obituary

Robert E. Mullin

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Robert E. Mullin of Manhattan, died at the age of 91 in New York City on June 1, 2021. Bob was born in April 1930, the youngest of three sons to William P. Mullin and Eileen (Retchford) Mullin. He was raised on St. Ann's Hill, Merrifield Street and attended St. Ann's Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Academy from which he graduated in 1948.

Bob graduated from Worcester State College in 1953 and earned a master's degree from there in 1956. He commenced his teaching career in Worcester at Downing Street School. Thereafter he accepted a position teaching the children of American servicemen and women in Japan, Germany, England, Morocco and Denmark. He made friends wherever he traveled and taught.

In 1965 he earned a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) from Teachers College at Columbia University. Bob then joined the faculty at Queens College as a Professor of Education specializing in Social Studies where he remained until his retirement in 1995. He influenced thousands of prospective teachers who relied on his teaching experience and expertise in preparing their own roles to be educators.

He leaves two nieces, Theresa Mullin and Gail Grenier and several grand-nephews and a grand-niece, and many lifelong friends in the Worcester area. He was predeceased by his two brothers, William J. Mullin and Rev. (Walter) Raymond Francis Mullin, OP.

Bob has funded several scholarships for Worcester State students including the Professor Grace Kendrick Musical Celebrations Fund to support the music program. He endowed the Eileen and William Mullin Memorial Scholarship to honor his parents and the Francis J. Mullin Memorial Scholarship to honor his uncle. He has also been a generous benefactor to the St. Dominic Legacy Society in honor of his brother Dominican Father Mullin (Order of Preachers).

He was proud of his Worcester roots and his family and his education. He was quoted several years ago "Our whole family story is a story of immigrants, a story of people who worked hard, who made it and who loved Worcester. I've had a wonderful life and I'm eternally grateful to Worcester State."

In lieu of flowers, Bob Mullin requested that gifts in his memory be made to his Alma Mater, Worcester State University. Checks should be made payable to Worcester State Foundation, Inc. and sent to University Advancement at Worcester State University – 486 Chandler Street, Worcester, MA 01602.

The funeral Mass of Resurrection is Monday, June 7, at 11 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St., Worcester. There will be a wake in the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the Mass. The rite of Christian burial will follow at St. John's Cemetery, 260 Cambridge St., Worcester.

My brother and I were best friends of Bob for at least 50 years. We travelled many places together over the world including Turkey, China and many more places.

My twin bother has since passed away and I miss Bob dearly but have many good memories to go back to now.

Dear Bob.
After getting to know you when I was a little babygirl in Baja California 1983, traveling with my parents, You always had a special place in my heart - even though an ocean apart.

Thank You for being such a good friend and mentor. Thank You for all well written letters, support and good times when visiting us in Sweden. It feels like yesterday when I think of you in your beautiful blue suit, smiling towards me at my wedding in Norway. And I am so greatful that my kids had the opportunity to getting to know you when we visited you in Manhattan. Lots of precious memories... You are always close to me in heart and in soul.

I am so sorry that we have lost Bobby. He and his family were as close to our family as any family could be. My mom was Mary Breen daughter of Breenie and my dad was George Leary.
Fun and laughter are my strongest memories of Bobby. Its was Bobby who taught me how to sing on our many trips to ride the waves in. Misquamekette and Hammpton Beach and just how stand to belt out songs for the Gleeclub concert .
Bobby was the son of Bill my God father and brother of Walter the priest who married my husband Ed and I and buried my mom with words of comfort.
The mullins "boys " were at our house all throughout my life. Most of those people are gone too but some how I know the halls of heaven are ringing out in song welcoming Bobby home . My deepest sympathies .
