For 30 years, Dr. Carpenter practiced with Nashville Orthopaedic Associates (now Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance), which was founded by his father, serving many terms as President until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Carpenter was born in Nashville January 13, 1930, graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy in 1948 and from Vanderbilt University 1952. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis in 1955, did his internship at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville, and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery, the New York Hospital, and Memorial Hospital for Cancer and Allied Diseases in New York in 1962. For many years, also, he was consultant to United Cerebral Palsy of Tennessee. Despite his busy medical career, Dr. Carpenter still found time to devote as much time as possible to his family. Fishing and travel were loves he shared first with his wife and son, and, in later years, with his loving daughter-in-law and two grandchildren as well. His family will receive friends at his home, 805 Wessex Towers on Friday, September 19th, from 5-8 p.m., for a Memorial visitation. His family requests that in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, 6300 North River Road, Suite 700, Rosemont, IL 60018-4261; the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center of Vanderbilt University; or to the school of one's choice. Growing up, the Carpenter name was commonplace in my family. My grandparents, Hooper and Dorothy Matthews were very close friends of George and Ida. I heard lots of stories about the "fish camp" and the fun times they had there. Then along with my parents, Wefel and Louise Matthews, they spent time with all of the family including George Jr. I was also his patient. He knew when to challenge me and when to comfort. I admit, much more challenge but, he got results! I wish your family all my love and prayers. Dorothy Matthews Sanders

Dr.C. was my doctor after a near fatal car accident on 1-1-78 in Clarksville, Tn. He provided excellent care to both me and my step-mother while we were in Baptist Hospital. I will always remember him and the care he gave me. He will be missed. My prayers go to his family. He was truly a great man.
