Nashville, TN
Departed this life on August 27, 2015. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Mrs. Edwina Hefner; three sons, Christopher Hefner, Jonathan (Katrina) Hefner, and David (Tasha) Hefner.
Public viewing will be Wednesday, September 2, 2015 from 12-4 p.m. at the Robert E. Lewis Memorial Chapel, 2500 Clarksville Pike. Body will lie in state Wednesday, September 2, 2015 in the Humanities Bldg. at T.S.U. Poag Auditorium from 5-6:15 p.m. with a memorial service to follow beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. Family visitation will be Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 12 Noon with services to follow at Christ Church Cathedral, 900 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203. Interment will be at Historic Greenwood Main Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to T.S.U. or to Morehouse College in the name of Dr. James A. Hefner.

I worked with Dr. Hefner when I was serving as Co-Chair of the National Alliance for Business Cluster program at Morehouse, under Dr.Gloster, in the late 70's. Together we started a lecture program to bring CEO's and senior executives to campus. Several of our lecturers were from the Insurance industry, and Jim soon leveraged that into an endowed chair and a major in Insurance. That was a hint of the great things to come from the young Dr. Hefner. I was 6 years younger than Jim, and I will always remember how he treated me as a friend and colleague, although I was just a fledgling business manager from Southern Bell. What a wonderful career he had, touching the lives of so many people. I am fortunate to have been one of them.

Dr. James Hefner was a close friend and colleague of mine for numerous years. He was truly a phenomenal educator whose contributions to Tennessee State University and the nation will be forever etched in the annals of higher education.
With his diligence, determination, dedication, and unyielding quest for excellence and love for Tennessee State University, he turned this great institution into a shining star in the State of Tennessee and the United States of America.
Dr. James A. Hefner has left an indelible impression on all of us who knew and worked with him. He will be sorely missed.
