My dance with Kent Weeks
I met Kent Weeks in 1988? (I’m kinda fuzzy about that year.) We were among a group of people on our way to Mutare, Zimbabwe to be part of the first board of directors meeting for a new university, sponsored by the United Methodist Church, a university for all of Africa. It was my first international trip; I even gloried in that 22-hour flight.
Being from Oklahoma and most recently Nashville, I was particularly curious as to what would be the first music I’d hear on the continent—to me—the Motherland. And to my surprise, it was country music!! Grrrr! Where were the drummers and shakers and the ululating? A country song was the first melody I heard as we checked in at the Jameson Hotel in Harare. I complained to Kent and we had a good laugh. Later our group had dinner and I must have been near Kent because after eating, we decided to check out the neighborhood, get the lay of the land.
Before long we heard music and followed the sounds to a night club. People were relaxing, chilling, and dancing. And yep, Kent and I had the boldness to join the dancing and we were cool. The music and the dance moves we heard and saw were kinda old school to us, so that gave us confidence, plus nobody knew us. A cute black girl and a white haired white guy doing our thang on the dance floor—you know we turned some heads! We felt like we were the hippest folk there. And we were—that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
After we got back to Nashville, I’d only see Kent at various Africa University meetings or gatherings. I think the last time we actually connected eye-to-eye was at my son’s high school graduation at Opryland. Kent was on stage and I came up to say hello after the ceremony. Whether spoken or not, I know we always enjoyed our inside joke.
I was saddened to hear of his final transition. I keep saying, “saints go marching in.” We are blessed with Kent’s tenacity, engaging spirit, commitment and his style of doing things. I will miss him and pray that his family members are encouraged by his remarkable presence on this earth.

As a reporter for The Tennessean, I covered Kent and the elected school board. He was a true public servant, always gracious and ever a twinkle in his eye. I admired him greatly.
