Robert Cochran Obituary

Dr. Robert Cochran, Jr.

Nashville, TN

Robert Taylor "Bob" Cochran, Jr., a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on December 29, 2016 at the age of 82.

Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna; children, Robert Cochran III (Ellen), Heather Cochran Cunningham (Christopher Cunningham), Charles Dean Cochran (Michelle) and grandchildren, Lindsey Elizabeth Cochran, Rachel Ann Cochran, Robert Taylor Cochran IV, Laurel Lea Cunningham, Kathryn Joan Cunningham, Charles Dean Cochran, Jr., and Carlton Ethan Cochran. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elma Sherrard and Robert Taylor Cochran, Sr. and brother, William Sherrard Cochran.

A Nashville native, Bob graduated from Hillsboro High School and Vanderbilt University. He received his MD from Vanderbilt University Medical School, and completed his residencies in internal medicine and neurology at the University of Texas and Duke University, respectively. In 1963, he established his private medical practice in Nashville. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he worked as a physician and achieved the rank of major.

While serving as co-director of the Pain Center in the 1990's at the former Centennial Hospital, Bob built a reputation as a leader in chronic pain treatment in Nashville. His life was dedicated to caring for his patients; he had a sincere affection and respect for each and every one of them as well as his outstanding staff, his "second family," who provided support, laughter and friendship throughout his 50+ year medical practice. Bob was an author of three books on the treatment of chronic pain. He noted that each of the human beings described in his books brought him a gift -- the gift of knowledge.

He was a true Renaissance man, always wanting to learn and grow. Among his many passions and accomplishments were cycling, mountain climbing, scuba diving, marathon running, reading, wine collecting, growing orchids, tennis, photography and astronomy.

Visitation for Dr. Cochran will take place on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Woodmont Christian Church. A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. followed by a family graveside service at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friday I was in an event where many who attended either knew or knew of Dr. Cochran. Everyone had fond memories to share. Even in his death, Dr Cochran continues to be a positive force!

I was thinking about Dr. Cochran again today. I was so very fortunate to be his patient; to learn from him about chronic pain, and to have hope for real management through his care. He was one of the
finest practitioners, and human beings I have ever met. He was ahead of the medical model and pushed through much resistance from colleagues. The world was blessed with him in it.

Dr. Cochran was a good man. He tried to help me and ease my suffering. I am sorry that he has passed.

I never met Dr. Cochran. I called him one day - out of the blue to talk about his book, his practice and to speak about my problems. The problems of a perfect stranger. He listened to me and answered all of my questions without any hesitation. I spoke to him quite a few times. This man was a doctor at his core. He cared about me and I was a stranger. I am so sad to hear he is gone.

So sorry to hear of the doctor's passing. I am reading his "The Opiate Cure." I believe there is a lot of valuable truth and info in this book. I wish the family every blessing. A. Rice.

I am so sorry to the family for your loss. I never met him but we have emailed and talked on the phone and I love reading his books. I have great respect for him and do so appreciate his genuine love and concern for his patients. Pain doctors now prescribe at a level that keeps them comfortable whereas Dr. Cochran was more concerned with his patients needs. He was a true Medical Maverick and will be greatly missed.

My. Sincere condolences to the Cochran family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Robert had the same spirit as Jesus had when it came to help people. I'm sure he will be among the ones Jesus promised to bring back to life when he said "For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who recognizes the Son and exercises faith in him should have everlasting life, and I will resurrect him on the last day.
