Stephen HOWELL Obituary

HOWELL, Stephen Donelson (Steve)Age 46. Born May 4, 1964 in Nashville. Died January 7, 2011. Steve battled melanoma for three years, always with a positive outlook. He is survived by his parents John F. and Rev. Margaret H. Howell; his brother, John F. (Charlene) Howell, Jr.; and sister Leigh Ann (David) Collins. He leaves behind a nephew, John F. Howell III (Jay); and three nieces, Allison Collins, Rachel Howell (Clayton) Mobley, and Caroline Collins, all of whom he loved dearly. Steve graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy, where he played football and tennis. He received his B.A. from the University of Mississippi and an MBA from the University of Tennessee. He worked successfully in the pension plan field with Mass Mutual, New York Life and Lincoln Financial. He recently formed his own consulting firm. Steve enjoyed tennis, golf and coaching youth football teams in Atlanta where he lived for most of his career. He was a member of The Nine O'Clocks Club in Atlanta and after moving back to Nashville, rejoined West End United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 3 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church, 2200 West End Ave. A family visitation will precede the service from 1-3 p.m. Honorary Pallbearers are Bill Adams of Memphis, Moreland Bell of Atlanta, Frank Bennett of Atlanta, Phillip Breckenridge of Tulsa, Ally Fuqua of Atlanta, David Goodwin of Memphis, Hale Hooper III, Bill McAbee of Charleston, John Monroe of Atlanta, John Reed from Knoxville, Chris Thoeny, and David Williamson. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Montgomery Bell Academy, West End United Church, Alive Hospice or Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center.

Otherwise known as "Hoops", for his ability to sink the basketball from outside the 3 point line. We Hammerfesters (the group of golf misfits Frank mentioned) are lucky to have had the time that we did with him. He will be sorely missed. Somehow, the next time I am behind a tree, don't be surprised if his spirit kicks my ball back into the fairway!
