Hendersonville, TN

Thomas William Dodd of Hendersonville, TN, was born on August 24, 1949 to the late William and Jane Dodd, and passed away on January 7, 2014.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and he is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Karen Newton Dodd; son, Michael Dodd (Holly); grandchild, Robin Miller; brother, Jim Dodd (Sue); sister, Marijane Dodd Brown (Steve), and many nieces and nephews. Additionally, Tom leaves behind countless friends and "family" that are beyond description.

Tom was a proud Vietnam Veteran and will be buried with military honors at the National Cemetery in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Tom's honor to the Wounded Warrior Project at 223 Rosa L. Parks Ave., Suite 301, Nashville, TN 37203.

A Life Celebration Memorial Service will be conducted on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Hendersonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service.

In keeping with Tom's personal preference for flip flops and shorts, we invite everyone to come celebrate Tom's life with us in the casual way for which he was known.

I am saddened to learn of Tom's passing. I am his second cousin as our paternal grandmothers were sisters, Ruby (his) and Genevieve (mine). I only met Tom a couple of times, last time being when I was about fourteen and we stopped in Huntsville to see his folks, Bill and Jane, just a few weeks before his wedding. I was attempting find Tom online as part of my family tree project and was stunned to find he had passed. Though I didn't know Tom well, I did know his parents well and knew Tom more from the proud stories they told of him. Two and a half years have passed and this may not get read, but my condolences still to his family.

Though it's been over 40 years since our days together Tom, I have so many memories of high school, our short term band, joining the army together, our late nights watching Johnny Carson (on school nights) while eating 3 layer pbj's.I know those who knew you, then and now, will miss your zest for life and sense of humor. God bless you and God be with your family at this time. I have missed you.

Karen, may your memories comfort and sustain you. To have loved, and been loved, by a man like Tom is a blessing beyond imagination. You and and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I hold fond memories of Tom. He cooked one mean steak! My heart goes out to my old friend, Karen and the rest of his family and friends.

Tom touched many hearts and souls. A lot of folks thought we were brothers, sometimes even thought we were twins. Yes, we were brothers, not by birth but definitely in spirit. God blessed me with his friendship. I am a better person for it. He will live forever in my memory and in my heart. Now it is time to put on your flip flops, turn up the music, and celebrate a life well lived. I love ya brother!
