James Mallett Obituary

JAMES LEROY MALLETT

MONTGOMERY - After a lengthy illness, James L. Mallett (Lt Col, USAF, Ret), smiled his final smile at home in Montgomery, AL, on the first day of summer, June 20. Born in Robertsdale, AL 68 years ago, and spending his formative years in Lafayette, LA, Jim moved to Montgomery, AL in 1982 where he lived the remainder of his life. Predeceased by his father, George Troy Mallett; his mother, Lorena Hester Mallett; and his step-mother, Mae Sones Mallett, Jim's greatest grief occurred in 1993 when he lost his oldest son, Jason, age 23. Last year, losing his father and mother-in-law, as well as his brother-in-law, James, Sue, and Roger Reehl, created a sorrowful void in his life just as he began his retirement and year-long illness. Jim's joy came from his surviving family--- brothers: George Troy Mallett, Houston, TX; Thomas (Barbara) Mallette, Lafayette, LA; sister: Ginger (Dallas) Baker, Houston, TX; wife: Susan Reehl Broderick Mallett, Montgomery, AL; sons and families: William (Kirsten) Mallett with grandchildren, Olivia, Lindsey, and Benjamin, Norfolk, VA; Bryan (Jackie) Broderick, with grandsons, Bowyn and Bridger, Fairhope, AL; and Jordan (Whitney) Broderick, with grandchildren, Ryan and Logan, Montgomery, AL.

Jim graduated from Lafayette (LA) High School, Southwestern Louisiana University and St. Louis's Webster College in addition to several military colleges. He spent almost 50 years serving across the nation, in Europe and in Southeast Asia while in the United States Air Force, and, following as Education Director at the Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters at Maxwell AFB, AL.

With all of Jim's professional accomplishments on earth, his compassion for others, and his impeccable integrity, he will be missed. His family and professional legacies will endure.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, June 24, at Dalraida United Methodist Church, 3817 Atlanta Hwy, Montgomery, Alabama, 36109. Dalraida's Pastoral Assistant, Jason Gregg, and Dr. Jay Hughes, Civil Air Patrol's National Chaplain (GA), will lead the service. Military honors will be presented, with visitation and an evening meal in the church Fellowship Hall to follow.

Any donation desires are requested to be provided to "Mallett ACE Memorial Fund" (Aerospace Connections in Education Program). Donations can be mailed to Civil Air Patrol/Finance, 105 South Hansell Street, Montgomery, AL 36112.

I served with Jim at Maxwell AFB during the mid 80's. I found his obituary purely by coincidence and am saddened to hear of his illness and passing. We shared many fond memories over daily lunches. He was one of the funniest men on the planet! Yes, he is remembered fondly.

I will always hold a place in my heart and mind for my good friend Jim Mallett and his wife Susan. I worked many projects with Jim over the years at the Civil Air Patrol, USAF AUXILIARY. He was warm, compassionate and very knowledgeable. He accomplished much in his life and served with honor and dedication in all phases of his life.
Jim, we shall always remember you and your kindness to others. Never forgotten.

Jim was a very close friend when he and Janet were living in San Antonio in the 1970s. Jim and I were both Flight Commanders at the Air Force Officer Training School. After work we'd often head to a little country-western tavern near Marbach Road on the San Antonio beltway to have a beer and listen to the latest country songs.

Susan, you are an inspiration to all of us. Through more heartbreak than anyone should ever experience, your faith and love for God and humanity have always shone through. We are so sorry about the loss of your husband and soulmate Jim. Though we didn't have the opportunity to know him well, we know that he was a very special person to make you so happy. We also know that you two worked together tirelessly in your shared passion for C.A.P. to make the world a better place. May the memories of all the joys and successes you shared always be with you and bring you peace.
With our love,

I spent many enjoyable years working with LtCol Jim Mallet and during that time we became great friends. You will hear similar stories from many that knew Jim for he was one that made friends easily.
I had the privilege of working on many projects with him. He was very dedicated to improving the training of CAP. Few know of the many small and big things he accomplished. Also, he and his wife did many things for us volunteer's with love and thanks. We enjoyed the Christmas gifts from Jim and Sue there is no words to express the loss of such a great person.
I have lost a great friend and we will never have that fishing adventure in Michigan we always talked about.
But Sue please know that Bonnie and I are with you in love and appreciation for a life well lived. Though we can not be there know that hugs are there with our love for you.
