Alice Veach Mosley Shaw

Alice Shaw Obituary

Shaw, Alice Veach Mosley Alice Anne Shaw, who taught third grade at LSU Lab School for 28 years, died peacefully Thursday, Sept 22, 2005, at home in Baton Rouge, with her devoted husband of 20 years, P.C. Shaw, and their puppy dog, Rusty, at her side. She was 83, born in Natchitoches on Feb. 23, 1922, the daughter of Josie and John Wallace. At LSU Lab School, she was every child's favorite teacher because she was so charismatic, loving and creative. She inspired both her third-graders and her LSU student teachers and she blessed the lives of hundreds of students at LSU. She loved them all. "Grandma" delighted listeners when she told warm, humorous stories of her childhood in her precious Southern drawl. Artistically talented, she made wonderful holiday decorations for her third-grade class as well as for her home and yard. She liked to cook and entertain, especially her family and her Women's Circle of First Presbyterian Church. She was a beautiful, gracious lady who was courageous through her lengthy illness and kept her quick wit and smile until her final hour. She is survived by her husband, P.C. Shaw; son, Wally Veach and his wife, Sage Redding Veach, of Baton Rouge; daughter, Lisa Veach Malikowski and her husband, Douglas, of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Ginny Veach Johnston and her husband, Kyle, and Matthew Lane, all of Baton Rouge, Clinton Malikowski, Stephanie Klapprich and her husband, Kurt, and Allison Hollman and her husband, Mark; and three great-grandchildren, Kyle and Shelby Klapprich and Mia Hollman, all of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her first husband, George Veach; and second husband, Stanley Mosley. Visitation will be at the First Presbyterian Church parlor on Thursday, Sept. 29, from 12:30 p.m. until service in the Dunham Chapel at 2:30 p.m., with Dr. Dick Gates officiating. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to a favorite charity.

I wish to express my deepest sympathies to the family of Mrs. Alice Veach Mosley Shaw. Mrs. Mosley was indeed a favorite teacher of many that passed through the halls of the Laboratory School. My favorite memories of Mrs. Mosley entail her love of reading. She would read stories outloud to us, and instilled in many of us a love for adventure possible for us all through books!

She was particularly sensitive to her students needs and feelings. I remember at least on one occassion, after someone or someones had said an unkind word on the playground that she brought us inside and gently explained to the class how easy we can hurt another's feelings. She was a wonderful teacher and person! Her legacy will live on in the lives of so many persons she touched while teaching at LSU.

May God's blessings be with you at this time!

Sincerely,

Member of U-High Class '78

I remember Mrs. Veach so well. She was my third grade teacher at the Lab School (1957-58). She was the tallest woman I'd ever seen at that time! She always had a kind word for each student. I was eager to be in her class because I had heard from those in grades ahead of mine that she was "so nice." And she was. I learned so much, including how to write "in script," during that year. I will never forget her and know that she will be greatly missed.

I wish I could attend her funeral, but I will be out of town. I send my condolences to her family and friends.
