Please accept our heartfelt condolences, Margeurite. Jim was truly a gentleman and a scholar. Southeastern's English Dept. was most fortunate to have him among its faculty for so many years. He raised the standard for us all, and he was a most-valued colleague. Jim will be greatly missed.

My uncle, Jim Walter, was the kind of uncle that a niece could look up to and admire with amazement. Some of my memories include his visits to the farm and hiding Easter eggs for us. I always felt in awe of his intelligence and how he would sit and listen to someone’s question or opinion, then cock his head as he thought for a minute and then deliver the most intelligent response in a quiet but masterful voice. He was a true gentleman and a true gentle man. I loved his humor. I loved the man. I love his family and am so sorry for their loss.

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. Jim was such a gentle soul. I loved going on home visits with him with St. Vincent de Paul especially at Christmas time. He would sit on the floor and ask the kids what they wanted from Santa and then make notes so that he wouldn't forget anything they said. I will miss him as a neighbor and friend.
Blessing to him family,
Susan & Ray

Jim was a cherished mentor for whom I have been deeply grateful for all the 40 years since I was his student. He saved my life by directing me to UD, and I am now so glad I got the chance to tell him so--though, of course, he modestly deflected that as more of that slightly inflated prose of mine that he had often edited. That editor has stayed on my shoulder down through the years, always making me smile as it guided me. My sincerest condolences to Marguerite and the children and grandchildren. He was a lovely, lovely man.

Dr. Walter taught me when I was in graduate school. He was a exemplary professor who helped me produce one of my finest literary analyses: a comparison of the relationships between Odysseus and Circe in the Odyssey and Aeneas and Dido in the Aeneid and how they illustrate the views of the divine between the ancient Greeks and the ancient Romans. I am so sorry for his loved ones, but please know he made his mark upon the world and helped so many to excel and love literary criticism.

I was a student of Dr. Walter's, both for individual courses and as a member of the SLU Honors Program. I was lucky enough to travel with him with the program, twice, to the National Collegiate Honors Conference, and kept in touch with him after graduation for several years. I am sorry to hear of his passing, bit confident that he took every bit out of life there was to take. I personally have seen him dance, in his own way, in a chair, to a blues musician in Florida, and shared with him many an unnecessarily esoteric conversation over a meal or at his office in the old Honors Program building. He was a true mentor to me and my SLU experience was undoubtedly enriched by having known him. I wish his family the utmost peace.
