John Wascom Obituary

John D. Wascom was born April 28, 1937, in Montpelier, to James Oro and Lillian Elaine (Schilling) Wascom. He died peacefully at home Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011. Visitation will be at Pine Grove Methodist Church on Friday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by funeral services at 1:30 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Darryl Tate. Burial in the church cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Grape Creek. John married the love of his life and high school sweetheart on Nov. 2, 1956, and they traveled and danced across the globe. John was honored to serve his country for 24 years in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Frankfurt; Germany; Madrid; Spain; Peshawar, Pakistan; and San Angelo, Texas, at Goodfellow AFB, his home away from home. His service included the Vietnam peace talks in Paris and two tours at the Pentagon. John retired from the Air Force in August 1978 and began a new career at Texas Cable Vision, which is now Suddenlink Communications. John enjoyed his job and the people he worked with immensely. John and his dancing partner were a part of La Paloma Dance Club and he attended Water Valley United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lillian Wascom; and a brother, James B. Wascom. John is survived by his travel and dance partner of 55 years, Jerry Barbara Sibley Wascom, of San Angelo; four children, Steven Wascom, of Bedford, Texas, Jerry Wascom and his wife, Joyce, of Mesquite, Texas, Wanda Reyes and her husband, Luis F., of Grape Creek, Texas, and Robert "Bob" Wascom and his wife, Linda, of Gladewater, Texas. He was a wonderful Papa and Grandpa to Michael, Joshua, Brandon, Stacey, William, Elizabeth, Dakota, Maddison, Savannah and Cheyenne; and great-granddaughter, Angel Marie. John is also survived by a sister, Betty Wascom, of Carlsbad, Texas; and his adopted of the heart family, Patrick, Jan, Hollye, and Taylor Sherman, of San Angelo. The family would like to thank the staff on 4 North and 5 North at Shannon Medical Center, Dr. Barnett, Dr. Demorey, and Megan, Alma, Veronica Toyie, and Laura from Baptist Memorial Hospice. Let me come in where you are weeping, friend,
And let me take your hand.
I, who have known a sorrow such as yours,
Can understand.
Let me come in -- I would be very still
Beside you in your grief;
I would not bid you cease your weeping, friend,
Tears bring relief.
Let me come in -- I would only breathe a prayer,
And hold your hand.
For I have known a sorrow such as yours,
and understand.
